Sr. HIV/STI Health Educator

Description

The Senior HIV/STI Health Educator, under the supervision of the HIV/STI Prevention Manager, advances population health by designing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive health promotion and education initiatives across diverse communities throughout the City of Detroit. This role plays a key part in developing and facilitating sexual health training programs tailored to meet the needs of adults, parents, guardians, youth, seniors, community partners, and other stakeholders.

Key responsibilities include equipping parents and guardians with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to communicate effectively with their children about sexual health, while also working directly with youth to strengthen their ability to make informed, healthy decisions regarding sex and relationships. The Senior HIV/STI Health Educator develops and delivers evidence-based curricula and training, participates in community engagement and outreach events, and builds strong, collaborative relationships with community-based organizations, schools, healthcare providers, and public and private partners to advance shared health priorities and promote sexual health awareness, HIV/STI prevention, and overall well-being.

HIV testing certification is preferred but not required at the time of hire; however, certification may be required at some point during employment. Work assignments may evolve as new initiatives and public health priorities emerge.

Examples of Duties

Program Implementation

• Plan and implement diverse strategies, initiatives, and activities designed to promote health and prevent disease across a range of community settings.
• Lead sexual health education efforts and collaborate with program staff to ensure the use of high-quality, evidence-based materials and activities.
• Design, carry out, and assess health education programs to ensure effectiveness and impact.
• Conduct research and gather evidence-based information on health promotion and education best practices from multiple credible sources.
• Create and distribute health education and behavior change resources that are medically accurate, culturally responsive, and instructionally appropriate.
• Deliver education to individuals, families, and community groups in ways that reflect their unique needs, lifestyles, cultural backgrounds, socioeconomic circumstances, and health literacy levels.
• Maintain strict client confidentiality and ensure full compliance with HIPAA regulations at all times.

Quality Improvement

• Collect, organize, and manage data to support ongoing program monitoring, evaluation, and continuous improvement efforts.
• Assess program outcomes and effectiveness, making adjustments and enhancements as needed.

Communication

• Provide focused, culturally relevant, and developmentally appropriate health promotion and disease prevention information to individuals and groups.
• Apply effective and professional communication strategies when engaging with individuals of varying ages and diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial/ethnic, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, and ability backgrounds.
• Actively network and cultivate strong working relationships with community-based organizations, public and private partners, schools, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to advance shared health priorities.
• Follow ethical standards and Detroit Health Department policies when collecting, managing, using, and sharing data and information.

Community Engagement/Outreach

• Represent the program at community events by staffing vendor/resource tables, engaging attendees, and providing clear, accurate information about available services and initiatives.
• Distribute sexual health resources and prevention materials (e.g., condoms, educational brochures, and other safer sex supplies) to event participants.
• Actively engage community members in meaningful conversations to increase awareness of HIV/STI prevention, testing, and related health services.
• Support outreach strategies that expand program visibility, strengthen community trust, and connect individuals to appropriate care and resources.

Other

• Engage in Public Health Emergency Preparedness activities during real-world events or training exercises.
• Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by a supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree Public Health, Business Administration, Health Science Administration or other related field, with two years experience in community engagement, community organizing, and project coordination and implementation.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirement of this position.
