Sr. Mechanical Engineer

Description Overview

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will lead mechanical engineering design and product development for Body Art Alliance’s FK Irons product portfolio, including tattoo machines, accessories, and related equipment. This individual will also lead design activities to support other product lines such furniture and various other brands in the product portfolio

This role is responsible for owning the full product development lifecycle, from concept development and CAD design through prototyping, testing, manufacturing support, and continuous product improvement.

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will work closely with internal teams and external partners including contract manufacturers, product teams, and engineering vendors to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet BAA’s performance and quality standards.

This position will also play a key role in building internal engineering capability, reducing reliance on external design firms, and supporting the long-term roadmap for in-house product development and innovation.

Key Responsibilities
Product Development & Engineering
  • Lead New Product Development and Introduction (NPDI) for FK Irons products including machines, accessories, and supporting hardware.
  • Design and develop mechanical systems for tattoo equipment including drive systems, housings, power components, and accessories.
  • Redesign and improve existing products to enhance performance, durability, and manufacturability.
  • Partner with Product Management to define product features, functionality, and technical requirements.
  • Expand into other product lines as required

Examples of current development initiatives include:
  • Tattoo machine drivetrain redesign
  • Charging dock development
  • Linear drive motor design
  • Development of accessories and equipment for PPL product lines.

CAD & Engineering Documentation
  • Develop and maintain 3D CAD models and technical drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Apply GD&T and tolerance analysis to ensure proper assembly and manufacturing.
  • Maintain engineering documentation including:
    • BOMs
    • Engineering change orders
    • revision control
  • Support consolidation of SolidWorks licenses and PDM systems across BAA brands.

Manufacturing & Vendor Support
  • Partner with contract manufacturers such as Antron to ensure designs are optimized for production.
  • Identify Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) opportunities.
  • Develop and improve manufacturing fixtures and assembly processes.
  • Support vendor quality investigations and root cause analysis.

Cost Reduction & Component Engineering
  • Research alternate materials and components to reduce cost of goods sold (COGS).
  • Validate parts for compliance with REACH and RoHS regulations.
  • Evaluate supplier capabilities and part performance.

Prototyping, Testing & Validation
  • Build and test prototypes to validate performance, durability, and manufacturability.
  • Implement rapid prototyping tools including 3D printing.
  • Develop and improve product testing standards and validation procedures.

Quality & Engineering Process Development
  • Support development of engineering quality systems including:
    • ECN processes
    • Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
    • Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA)
  • Partner with Quality and Operations to resolve manufacturing and field issues.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with:
    • Product Development
    • Operations
    • Quality
    • Supply Chain
    • Manufacturing partners
  • Coordinate with software and electrical engineering resources as needed.

Skills & Expertise
  • Strong experience with SolidWorks CAD modeling
  • Advanced understanding of GD&T and mechanical tolerancing
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
  • Knowledge of prototype development and testing methodologies
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers and global suppliers
  • Familiarity with 3D printing and rapid prototyping tools
  • Understanding of engineering quality systems (RCA, CAPA, ECN)

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 7+ years of mechanical design engineering experience
  • Experience developing commercial products from concept through production
  • Experience working with manufacturing partners and external engineering firms
  • Strong project management and cross-functional collaboration skills
Preferred:
  • Experience with motor-driven products or electromechanical systems
  • Experience working with consumer or professional equipment products

Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods working on a computer and reviewing technical designs
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds
  • Travel up to 20–30% to manufacturing partners or testing locations
