Dirks Heavy Contractors is seeking a detail-oriented and hands-on Staff Accountant to join our team in the Butler, Missouri office. This position plays a critical role in supporting daily accounting operations and project financial management for a growing heavy civil construction company. The ideal candidate will have accounting experience, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Construction accounting experience is highly preferred.

Responsibilities Accounts Receivable

• Prepare customer invoices and progress billings
• Process Time & Material (T&M) billings
• Monitor collections and aged receivables
• Assist with customer account management and payment tracking

Accounts Payable

• Process vendor invoices and verify coding accuracy
• Prepare and process vendor payments
• Reconcile vendor statements
• Track lien waivers and supporting documentation

Payroll & General Accounting

• Process payroll and maintain payroll records
• Support certified payroll requirements when applicable
• Prepare journal entries
• Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet accounts
• Research and resolve accounting discrepancies

Project & Construction Accounting

• Maintain job cost records and verify cost coding
• Monitor labor, equipment, material, subcontractor, and project costs
• Assist with Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting
• Support project forecasting and cost reporting
• Track contract values and change orders

Additional Responsibilities

• Maintain subcontractor insurance and compliance records
• Assist with month-end closing activities
• Support audits, bonding requests, and financial reporting
• Perform other accounting and administrative duties as assigned

Qualifications Required

• Accounting experience
• Strong understanding of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions
• Experience performing account reconciliations
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

Preferred

• Construction accounting experience
• Knowledge of job costing and project accounting
• Experience with WIP reporting
• Understanding of construction billing processes
• Experience working in a contractor, construction, utility, or heavy civil environment

Pay: $60,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
