(LAS), the private not-for-profit law firm defending rights daily! LAS provides civil legal assistance to indigent residents of Orange County. We are a client centered organization committed to providing a full range of high-quality legal representation and advocacy to victims of domestic violence, sexual trauma, and stalking under the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant, primarily in areas of domestic violence, family law, immigration, consumer, and housing law. Position Description: Participate in client intake, outreach, and representation. Interact with clients (virtually or in person), providing legal advice and counseling. Draft correspondence, pleadings, and other written documents on behalf of clients. Represent clients in depositions, emergency and regular hearings, trials, and administrative hearings. Assist pro bono attorneys in the representation of eligible clients and work with incredible community partners to ensure victims’ safety and stability. Act as a resource for other staff in substantive areas of law in which attorney develops a specialty with a focus on family law. Participate in the firm’s community education program by speaking with grateful community groups, agency staff, and potential clients about LAS services. Develop professional ties by participating in statewide work groups to promote justice for our clients. This position is funded in part by a grant and the attorney must adhere to goals and outcomes delineated in the grant contract. Legal training and court shadowing is provided. Skills/Qualifications: 3-5 years of family law experience is preferred. Good communication skills; ability to work constructively with others in a teamwork setting; good judgment; strong organizational capability: ability to work independently and under pressure; and ability to handle contested hearings are all preferred. Strong written and verbal skills; an ability to multi-task; proficient in Microsoft Word and Outlook; an ability to learn and work in a customized electronic case management system. Bilingual in English and Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian-Creole strongly preferred but not required.
Benefits: Compensation begins at $75,000 and based upon litigation experience, plus bonus and salary adjustments. EXCELLENT benefits worth substantial financial value.
Time Requirement: LAS office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm. This is a full-time, salaried position, requiring flexible availability. Work may be conducted remotely and outside of office hours, with LAS approval.
