DPA is looking for a zealous advocate manager to lead the Post-Conviction Branch. The Post-Conviction Branch deals with many of the critical legal issues affecting the justice system. For example, Padilla v. Kentucky, 559 U.S. 356 (2010), which changed national criminal practice related to immigrants, came out of DPA’s Post- Conviction Branch. DPA’s Post-Conviction Branch is appointed to a wide variety of cases, from cases involving death row inmates, to claims of ineffective assistance of counsel, to civil cases challenging prison discipline.
Candidates must be able to provide management and direction to a team of lawyer advocates, criminal defense investigators, mitigation specialists, alternative sentencing workers, and administrative staff. The Staff Attorney Manager will maintain a caseload while ensuring that the office team is providing effective representation to incarcerated clients statewide. DPA leaders participate in departmental educational initiatives, stay current on all changes in the law, seek outreach in the local community, and maintain relationships with political and systemic stakeholders.
Kentucky DPA looks for individuals who have demonstrated a desire to help the poorest and often the most vulnerable in their communities. The ideal candidate exhibits exceptional organizational skills, is self- directed and is also comfortable working with their defense team which includes other attorneys, investigators, alternative sentencing workers, and legal office administrative staff. Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Manages day-to-day operations of the Post-Conviction Branch and supervision of staff.
- Represents people not able to afford an attorney on post-conviction claims a reasonable person of means would bring at their own expense.
- Representation requires excellent research and writing skills, and high attention to detail.
- Duties are performed in the office, courtroom, and correctional settings.
- Travel is required.
