Job Title: ICU Nurse

Department: Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Reports To: Admin and HR

Employment Type: Full-time

Job Summary:

The ICU Nurse is responsible for providing high-quality nursing care to critically ill patients requiring intensive monitoring and treatment. The nurse ensures patient safety, accurate assessment, timely intervention, and continuous communication with physicians and multidisciplinary teams to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Patient Care and Monitoring:

Provide continuous and comprehensive nursing care to critically ill patients.

Monitor vital signs (ECG, SpO₂, BP, temperature, respiratory rate) and promptly report abnormalities.

Administer prescribed medications, fluids, and infusions accurately.

Operate and manage ICU equipment (ventilators, infusion pumps, cardiac monitors, defibrillators, etc.).

Assist physicians during procedures such as intubation, central line insertion, and code blue resuscitation.

Maintain accurate and updated patient records, nursing notes, and treatment charts.

2. Clinical and Technical Competence:

Ensure proper infection control and aseptic techniques at all times.

Manage patients on mechanical ventilation and perform suctioning as needed.

Monitor intake and output (I/O) meticulously and report any discrepancies.

Perform routine nursing procedures such as dressing changes, catheterization, and positioning to prevent pressure sores.

Handle emergency situations calmly and efficiently following ICU protocols.

3. Communication and Coordination:

Coordinate with intensivists, resident doctors, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals for patient care.

Communicate effectively with patients’ relatives, providing emotional support and updates as per hospital policy.

Participate in shift handovers, ensuring seamless communication and patient continuity.

4. Documentation and Reporting:

Maintain accurate, legible, and timely documentation of all nursing activities and observations.

Report incidents, equipment failures, or adverse events immediately to the concerned authority.

5. Quality, Safety, and Compliance:

Adhere to hospital policies, NABH/JCI standards, and ICU protocols.

Participate in infection control audits, training sessions, and continuous quality improvement programs.

Ensure safe disposal of biomedical waste according to hospital guidelines.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Education: GNM / B.Sc. Nursing / M.Sc. Nursing (Registered Nurse with State Nursing Council)

Experience: 1–3 years of experience in ICU or critical care preferred (freshers with training may be considered).

Skills:

Proficiency in ICU equipment and emergency procedures

Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills

Excellent communication and teamwork abilities

Compassion, empathy, and emotional resilience
