Staff Software Engineer, GCS Blobstore Metadata

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience programming in C++.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products.
  • 5 years of experience with core infrastructure, large-scale distributed data technologies or cloud-based platforms.
  • 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 8 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional, or cross-business projects.
  • Understanding of database internals or experience optimizing Spanner-based metadata stacks for scalability.
  • Expertise in designing and implementing mission-critical, large-scale distributed storage systems.

The Google Customer Solutions (GCS) Metadata team is re-architecting the planet-scale foundation of Blobstore, a distributed storage system managing over 100 trillion objects for products like YouTube and AI/ML. As a Technical Lead, you will drive the evolution of this next-generation stack, balancing deep technical mastery of metadata infrastructure with organizational influence. This role offers the opportunity to lead critical architectural decisions and deliver massive impact on reliability and efficiency for billions of users.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $197,000-$291,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of mission-critical Blobstore metadata software, driving key technical decisions and long-term architectural evolution.
  • Identify bottlenecks and optimize Spanner-based stacks to improve reliability, cost-efficiency, and global scalability.
  • Partner with GCS Engineering Leads and SRE to drive storage optimizations and represent the team in high-level technical reviews.
  • Translate complex requirements from partners like YouTube and AI/ML into core capabilities, influencing their architectures for optimal integration.
  • Foster a culture of engineering excellence by leading high-impact projects and mentoring team members to support their professional growth.
