Staff Software Engineer, Workspace GenAI Platform Infrastructure

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience programming in C++.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products.
  • 5 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture.
  • 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 8 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional, or cross-business projects.

The Workspace AI platform team uses Google's Gen AI models and infrastructure to build an AI platform to power Google Workspace products, such as Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, Google Drive, which are actively used by hundreds of millions of users that depend on us each day. We're helping users be more productive by automating repetitive tasks, surfacing new insights and visualizations, and making content creation, collaboration, and consumption even easier. We’re responsible for agentic features that help users be their most creative, productive selves at work, school, and home.

AI will change the future of work in profound ways, and our products— Gmail, Docs, Drive, Calendar, Sheets, Vids and Meet are at the forefront. From pre-computed summaries for email threads, summaries for meetings, and videos created from a document using lifelike AI avatars, our AI opportunity is huge. Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

US: $207000 - $301000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities

  • Establish the technical outlook, and lead the architectural evolution of Corto to serve as a unified solution for all Workspace AI features requiring persistent storage, including its expansion to fit the needs of ever-changing landscape of genAI (e.g., long-running, async agentic workflows).
  • Delivery of core system components (e.g., data lifecycle managements, schema changes, canonical API contracts) for feature teams to access stored AI artifacts across Workspace apps.
  • Ensure Compliance, Security, and Governance. Fully understand a variety of Workspace Security and Compliance (S&C) requirements, and ensure that Corto is compliant by default.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for onboarding new genAI use cases, and work closely with product and other technical leads to ensure architectural alignment and roadmap prioritization.
