Description of Work

This is an anticipated vacancy.

The Statewide Initiatives Group of the NCDOT Office of Strategic Initiatives and Program Support located in Raleigh, NC is seeking an advanced level engineer to oversee and manage planning processes and programs with a statewide perspective. Primary work duties include statewide multimodal planning and sustainable transportation. Applicants must be self-motivated, diligent, and with strong consensus building and communication skills. Enthusiasm, flexibility, and integrity are necessary. One should be able to plan, schedule, and conduct complex engineering work and convey findings in oral and written report form independently.

Applicants should have knowledge of transportation planning principles, alternative modes of transportation, environmental constraints, and other project planning principles and how they impact transportation planning considerations. Applicants should have a thorough knowledge of the organization and operations of the NCDOT. Applicants must be able to work with a high degree of accuracy and timeliness in evaluation of data and have high attention to detail. Excellent communication skills, effective ability to review technical reports and organizational skills are paramount.
Most work is done in Raleigh office with occasional evening or overnight meetings. Applicants should be able to drive alone, communicate effectively during public presentations, lift/carry materials for public meetings and be available to work weekdays 8am – 5pm. This position requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Must be able to work and communicate with internal and external customers in a professional manner.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC20 $ 67,852 - $ 118,741

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in any of the following: transportation planning, project development, engineering, or program management.
  • Experience or training in any of the following: evaluating data or data management.
  • Experience or training in computer applications and operations (MS Excel, ArcGIS, etc).
  • Experience writing memos, reports, and emails that clearly convey technical information and engineering concepts with elected officials, citizens, and engineers.
  • Experience interacting with any of the following: state, federal, regional, or local governments or planning organizations

Additional Expectations : Preference will be given to candidates having PE registration or pursuing PE registration, with courses or experience in Transportation Planning and/or Engineering.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
