STEM Camp Instructor and Assistant Instructor – Odyssey Camps

Location: Flagstaff Science Center (Moonshot) & other Northern Arizona camp sites
Reports To: Education Programs Director
Status: Seasonal, Full-Time during camp weeks (May 23–August 1; possible spring/fall sessions)
Compensation: $18–$26/hour, based on experience

About Odyssey Camps

Odyssey Camps, powered by the Meteor Crater Education Alliance, are week-long, hands-on STEM adventures for kids ages 5–13. Our camps blend science, engineering, and creativity into fun, memorable experiences that inspire curiosity and confidence. From launching rockets to exploring ancient survival skills, campers learn by doing in a safe, engaging, and supportive environment.

Position Overview

We are hiring 3 camp instructors and 2 assistant instructors. STEM Camp Instructors lead daily camp activities, ensuring an exciting, safe, and inclusive environment for all participants. You’ll bring STEM concepts to life through demonstrations, guided projects, and playful challenges—while fostering teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity. Assistant instructors will aid in carrying out the provided lesson plans and supporting the campers, as needed. Instructor pay range: $20-26 per hour and may work up to 55 hours per week. Assistant Instructor pay range: $18-20 per hour and are expected to work 40 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ability to implement provided lesson plans, lead hands-on STEM activities, experiments, and engineering challenges based on camp themes.
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive, and encouraging atmosphere for campers of all backgrounds and abilities.
  • Assist with camp setup, cleanup, and organization of materials each day.
  • Help supervise campers during activities, lunch, and transition times, ensuring safety and positive group dynamics.
  • Support volunteers and high school assistants in their roles with clear guidance and mentorship.
  • Communicate regularly with MCEA Staff about daily needs, challenges, and successes.
  • Enforce camp rules and safety protocols both indoors and outdoors.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience working with children (teaching, camp counseling, tutoring, afterschool programs, etc.).
  • Enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, and math, and the ability to inspire that enthusiasm in kids.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and group management skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations and think on your feet.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a professional, positive attitude.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs, work indoors and outdoors, and be active for extended periods.
  • Current or ability to obtain Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card (Arizona) and CPR/First Aid certification.

Preferred:

  • Ability to create engaging lesson plans related to the established themes.
  • Experience in informal STEM education, makerspaces, or science camps.
  • Background in a STEM-related field (student, graduate, or professional).
  • Comfort with hands-on science equipment, craft tools, and simple technology.

Schedule

  • Camp weeks run Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM–4:00 PM (plus setup/prep time as needed).
  • Training and orientation before the start of camp.
  • Potential for work in school break camps during fall, winter, and spring.
