Sterile Compounding Pharmacy Technician

Job Overview

As a Compounding Pharmacy Technician, you’ll play a vital role in preparing high-quality medications for our veterinary patients. From blending ingredients to maintaining strict quality control, you’ll ensure that every medication reflects the care our clients and their furry friends deserve.

Key Responsibilities

1. Preparation and Compounding of Sterile Medications

  • Accurately compound sterile preparations such as injections, eye drops, and intravenous (IV) solutions in compliance with USP <797> guidelines.
  • Adhere to aseptic techniques and sterile compounding practices to ensure product safety and integrity.
  • Follow Master Formulation Records and Compounding Records to prepare sterile medications.

2. Cleanroom Procedures and Maintenance

  • Maintain cleanroom and anteroom cleanliness according to USP <797> standards, including regular cleaning, disinfection, and environmental monitoring.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks for cleanroom surfaces, floors, walls, and equipment.
  • Properly gown and don personal protective equipment (PPE) to maintain aseptic conditions.

3. Equipment Operation and Maintenance

  • Operate and maintain laminar airflow workbenches (LAFWs), biological safety cabinets (BSCs), and compounding aseptic isolators (CAIs).
  • Perform routine cleaning, calibration, and certification of equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Monitor and document equipment functionality and environmental parameters.

4. Aseptic Technique and Quality Control

  • Perform compounding tasks under sterile conditions, including accurate weighing, measuring, and mixing of ingredients.
  • Conduct media fill testing and gloved fingertip sampling to demonstrate proficiency in aseptic technique.
  • Conduct visual inspections of compounded sterile products (CSPs) for particulates, clarity, and seal integrity.

5. Documentation and Record-Keeping

  • Accurately complete and maintain Batch Records for sterile preparations, including lot numbers, expiration dates, and quantities.
  • Maintain logs for cleaning, environmental monitoring, and quality control checks.
  • Ensure proper labeling and packaging of CSPs with required information (e.g., beyond-use dates, storage instructions).

6. Inventory Management

  • Manage inventory of sterile compounding supplies, including raw materials, syringes, needles, vials and IV bags.
  • Monitor stock levels and order replacements to prevent shortages.
  • Ensure proper storage and organization of materials, including temperature-sensitive products.

7. Compliance with USP <797> and Regulatory Standards

  • Follow all USP <797> guidelines, state pharmacy laws, and FDA regulations.
  • Assist in preparing for and participating in audits, inspections, and certification processes.
  • Stay informed about updates to USP <797> and other regulatory standards.

8. Safety Practices

  • Handle hazardous and non-hazardous drugs safely, adhering to USP <800> guidelines when applicable.
  • Dispose of sharps, hazardous waste, and unused materials according to established protocols.
  • Identify and report safety hazards or deviations from sterile procedures.

9. Communication and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with pharmacists and other technicians to ensure the accuracy and efficiency of sterile compounding processes.
  • Communicate any issues, such as equipment malfunctions or raw material discrepancies, to the pharmacist promptly.

10. Continuous Learning and Training

  • Participate in ongoing training to enhance aseptic technique and sterile compounding skills.
  • Complete required competency assessments, including annual evaluations and proficiency testing.

11. Continuous Learning and Training

  • Stay updated on changes to USP <795> guidelines and industry best practices.
  • Participate in ongoing training and certification programs to enhance compounding skills and knowledge.

12. General Support

  • Assist with packaging, labeling, and dispensing of compounded medications as required.
  • Support other pharmacy operations, including non-compounding tasks, during downtime or as needed.

When You’ll Work

  • Monday–Friday: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
  • (No weekends!)

What You Bring

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED (required).
  • Preferred Experience: Alabama Pharmacy Technician certification or similar credentials.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment.
  • A meticulous and disciplined approach to following guidelines and procedures.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally (assistance available) and stand for extended periods.
