Responsibilities of a Store Keeper in Construction
1. Material Receiving
- Receive all incoming construction materials, equipment, and tools.
- Verify quantity and quality against delivery challan, purchase order, and invoice.
- Report any shortages, damages, or discrepancies immediately.
2. Proper Storage & Handling
- Ensure safe and organized storage of materials (cement, steel, pipes, electrical items, plumbing materials, etc.).
- Maintain proper stacking methods to avoid damage.
- Ensure materials are protected from weather, moisture, and theft.
3. Issuing Materials
- Issue materials to site engineers, supervisors, or contractors as per requisition slip.
- Maintain authorization control for issuing valuable items.
4. Inventory Management
- Maintain updated stock records manually or through ERP/software.
- Conduct daily/weekly/monthly stock checks.
- Prepare stock statements and report shortages in advance.
5. Documentation & Record Keeping
- Maintain GRN, issue registers, stock ledgers, consumption reports, and returnable/non-returnable gate passes.
- Keep all documents properly filed for audit and verification.
6. Coordination
- Coordinate with purchase department for material requirements.
- Work with site engineers to understand daily/weekly material needs.
- Communicate with vendors for delivery schedules.
7. Safety & Compliance
- Ensure the store area is clean, safe, and well-organized.
- Follow safety norms for storing hazardous materials (chemicals, paints, fuels).
- Ensure fire extinguishers and safety equipment are in place.
8. Asset & Tool Management
- Maintain record of tools and equipment issued to workers.
- Track returnable items and maintain tool history.
- Arrange repairs or servicing of tools when needed.
9. Theft Prevention & Security
- Monitor movement of materials in and out of the store.
- Implement proper gate pass system.
- Keep store locked and secure.
10. Reporting
- Prepare daily stock report, material consumption report, and material requirement plan (MRP).
- Submit periodic updates to project manager or site in-charge
