Position Summary
The Town of Newburgh is seeking a qualified and motivated Street Superintendent to lead the daily operations of the Street Department. This position plans, organizes, and supervises the maintenance and repair of town streets, alleys, stormwater infrastructure, and public rights-of-way.
The Street Superintendent oversees departmental personnel, coordinates infrastructure projects, manages equipment and inventories, and ensures compliance with stormwater regulations. This role works closely with Town administration, engineers, contractors, and the public to maintain safe and efficient public infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Personnel Management
- Plan, assign, schedule, and supervise daily activities of Street Department staff
- Provide leadership, training, and performance evaluations for personnel
- Ensure safe work practices and compliance with departmental safety standards
- Coordinate staffing for emergency and after-hours response when necessary
Street & Infrastructure Maintenance
- Oversee maintenance and repair of town streets, alleys, and related infrastructure
- Manage stormwater infrastructure including drainage inspections and repairs
- Ensure proper installation and maintenance of street and warning signs
- Coordinate snow and ice removal operations
- Remove debris, vegetation, and obstructions from public rights-of-way
Project Planning & Coordination
- Assist in developing departmental goals, policies, and operational procedures
- Develop annual and seasonal road maintenance schedules
- Coordinate with engineers, contractors, and consultants on infrastructure projects
- Participate in planning and implementation of public works improvement projects
- Assist with administration of grant-funded infrastructure initiatives
Budgeting & Asset Management
- Assist with preparation and management of department budget requests
- Maintain inventories of vehicles, tools, equipment, and traffic control devices
- Track infrastructure assets including streets, alleys, and stormwater systems
- Maintain mapping and documentation for capital improvement planning
Stormwater Compliance
- Serve as MS4 Coordinator for the Town of Newburgh
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local stormwater regulations
- Prepare reports for the Town of Newburgh Stormwater Board
- Maintain documentation for regulatory compliance and inspections
Administration & Public Interaction
- Maintain records including maintenance logs, accident reports, and equipment inventories
- Respond to citizen inquiries related to streets and drainage
- Coordinate with Town departments, government agencies, and contractors
- Represent the Street Department at meetings and project reviews
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in public works, construction, or infrastructure maintenance
- Supervisory experience preferred
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Indiana Driver’s License with acceptable driving record
- CDL preferred or ability to obtain
- Ability to obtain required certifications related to equipment operation, safety, and stormwater management
Knowledge & Skills
- Street, drainage, and infrastructure maintenance practices
- Stormwater management and MS4 regulatory requirements
- Construction and roadway maintenance methods
- Equipment operation and occupational safety procedures
- Personnel supervision, scheduling, and performance management
- Basic budgeting, recordkeeping, and reporting
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to:
- Stand, walk, bend, lift, and perform manual labor for extended periods
- Lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds
- Operate hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Climb ladders, operate machinery, and drive municipal vehicles

Pay: $60,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
