Role Overview
You’ll fabricate and install steel structures (beams, columns, platforms, pipe supports, skids, frames) per drawings and WPS, ensuring dimensional accuracy, code compliance, and safe execution in shop and/or site conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret fabrication drawings/ISOs, WPS/PQR, and weld symbols to plan work.
- Prepare joints (fit-up, beveling, root gaps), align using clamps/fixtures; verify with measuring tools.
- Execute welding (primarily SMAW and FCAW; GMAW/GTAW as required) in all positions (1G–4G; 6G advantageous).
- Perform tacking, root pass, fill, and cap; control heat input, interpass temp, and distortion.
- Conduct pre-/post-weld cleaning, grinding, and visual self-inspection (VT) against acceptance criteria.
- Support NDT (MT/PT/UT/RT) by preparing joints and repairing as per NCRs/Weld Repair Procedures.
- Oxy-fuel/plasma cutting, basic fabrication (drilling, layout, fit-up) and on-site erection activities.
- Maintain welding machines, leads, consumables, and traceability of electrodes/wires and base materials.
- Follow PTW/Hot-Work, confined space, working-at-heights, and lifting plans; keep work area 5S compliant.
- Complete job cards, weld maps, heat numbers, and daily production reports.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Trade/ITI/NVQ or Diploma in Welding/Fabrication (or equivalent apprenticeship).
- 3–5 years structural welding experience in workshop/shipyard/construction/O&G environments.
- Valid welder qualifications: ISO 9606-1 / ASME Section IX / AWS D1.1 (3G/4G minimum; 6G preferred).
- Proven skills in SMAW and FCAW; familiarity with GMAW (and GTAW for stainless) is a plus.
- Able to read drawings, weld symbols, WPS; competent with measuring tools (tape, square, levels, vernier).
- Physically fit to work in all positions, at height, and in hot/outdoor conditions.
Preferred/Added Advantage
- Experience with offshore/marine structures and shipyard standards.
- Knowledge of distortion control, preheat/post-weld heat treatment basics.
- Basic rigging awareness and familiarity with erection sequencing.
- CSWIP 3.0/Visual Welding Inspector basics (nice to have).
HSE & Compliance
- Strict adherence to Hot-Work/PTW, LOTO, gas cylinder safety, fire watch requirements.
- Use of PPE (helmet with proper shade, gloves, FR clothing, harness at heights).
- Participation in toolbox talks, JSAs, and stop-work authority.
KPIs / Performance Measures
- Weld rejection rate (NDT/VT) within target.
- First-time-right percentage and productivity (DLH per meter of weld).
- Compliance to WPS and safety observations closed out.
- On-time completion per fabrication schedule.
Tools & Materials Exposure
SMAW/FCAW/GMAW sets, ovens/quivers for electrodes, grinders, cutting sets, clamps/fixtures; carbon steel, SS, and structural shapes (H/I beams, channels, plates, angles).
