A PEB Structure Design Engineer is responsible for designing steel buildings using pre-engineered components. The design focuses on optimal material usage, strength, safety, cost efficiency, and compliance with building codes.
Key Responsibilities1. Structural Analysis & Design
- Design primary members: rafters, columns, tapered beams
- Design secondary members: purlins, girts, eave struts
- Analyze frames for dead load, live load, wind load, crane loads, seismic loads
- Optimize steel sections to minimize weight
2. PEB System Design
- Prepare design calculations for:
- Main Frame
- Bracings
- Endwalls
- Crane beams / runway girders
- Mezzanine floors
- Foundations (sometimes handled by civil team)
3. Coordination
- Work with detailers, estimators, manufacturing team
- Review fabrication drawings
- Communicate with clients, architects, and consultants
4. Software Usage
Common tools include:
- AutoCAD (2D drawings)/ZW CAD
Required Skills
- Strong understanding of structural engineering
- Knowledge of load specifications (IS 800, IS 875, AISC, MBMA, ASCE 7)
- Steel design (tension, compression, bending, buckling, lateral-torsional buckling)
- Familiarity with PEB components and manufacturing
- Ability to optimize design for economy and strength
- Good understanding of wind behavior and seismic design
Typical Workflow of a PEB Design Engineer
- Receive building geometry and requirements
- Apply loads as per code
- Analyze building frames
- Design members & connections
- Optimize steel usage
- Prepare design reports
- Review shop drawings and finalize
