CDPH is the state department responsible for public health in California. It is a subdivision of the California Health and Human Services Agency. It enforces some of the laws in the California Health and Safety Codes, notably the licensing of some types of healthcare facilities. Pathways is an innovative program that provides training, hands-on work experience, and ongoing support to people from historically underrepresented and diverse backgrounds who are interested in starting a career in public health. Through the Pathways program, internships are available at LHDs across the state. Students will be placed at an LHD host site in or near their location. Our internships provide an opportunity to work in a variety of different Public Health disciplines such as health education, epidemiology, communicable disease control, community engagement, emergency preparedness, harm reduction, environmental health, program planning, evaluation, health policy, and more.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is seeking to hire two student assistants to participate in the California Pathways into Public Health (Pathways) Internship Program.
Pathways is a paid, academic-year internship designed for community college, undergraduate, and graduate students from historically underrepresented and diverse backgrounds who are interested in public health. Interns gain hands-on experience at local health departments (LHDs) across California, reflecting the state’s geographic and demographic diversity. The program provides exposure to public health service delivery at the local level, meaningful project work, and ongoing professional development opportunities.

The Pathways Internship Program 2026-2027 Academic Year cohort will run from September 9, 2026, through May 14, 2027. Interns work fifteen (15) to twenty-nine (29) hours per week during the Fall and Spring session, with an option to work full-time hours during winter break. Interns selected for this internship opportunity will be placed with Modoc County Public Health. All applicants must be available to report in-person to this location as our program is not designed for fully remote placements.
Note: Our program is not intended or designed to satisfy practicum requirements for graduate students nor academic credit requirements for students at any level. Additionally, we are not able to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or affiliation agreement with a school or university.

Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.
UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week’s notice.
UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California throughout the course of employment.

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Some weekend hours may be available for special events. The final work schedule will be determined by discussions between the intern and the host site.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees may work up to 29 hours per workweek (Monday– Friday) throughout the course of the internship program.
Compensation
$18.00 - $21.00 per hour

Work is performed in a hybrid environment.
Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement. The decision to permit an employee to work from home is at the discretion of the supervisor or employer and may, at any time and with or without cause, unilaterally terminate the option to work from home.
