Substitute Grounds Worker

Applications are now being accepted for a Substitute Grounds Worker. This is a temporary hourly position with no benefits.


Effective: Immediately, upon School Board approval


Location: District-wide, where needed.


Hourly Rate: $21.95


Primary Function:

This position is responsible for the care and maintenance of District landscapes, grounds, fields and athletic facilities using varied tools and equipment to ensure established efficiency and high operational and maintenance standards.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs all landscapes, grounds, fields and athletic facilities.
  • Performs duties including mowing, watering, edging, pruning, trimming, fertilizing, dethatching and mulching.
  • Applies fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals as well as practicing integrated pest management techniques.
  • Cares for and cleans lawns, trees, shrubs, gardens, fields, playgrounds, parking lots and other district areas.
  • Removes snow and ice from roadways, driveways, parking lots, sidewalks, walkways and other areas.
  • Marks and cares for athletic fields of natural and synthetic turf.
  • Uses varied manual and power tools and equipment to perform assigned task.
  • Move equipment, furniture, furnishings, file cabinets, supplies, materials and other items from one location to another.
  • Assist with setting up for events.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment to perform assigned task.
  • Maintains service records and completes necessary repair forms.
  • Keeps shop clean and orderly and maintains tools in good working order.
  • Maintains equipment for safety inspections according to the guidelines of the PA Department of Labor and Industry.

Other Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • May be required to assist with transporting students, materials and equipment.
  • May be required to perform other duties as directed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent; and
  • Experience in grounds keeping, landscaping or other related area satisfactory to the district; and
  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania drivers license
  • Has knowledge of and ability to use the tools, and equipment for the position; and
  • Satisfactory criminal, child abuse and health clearances; and
  • The ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

Physical, Mental and Work Environment Conditions:


  • The person, while performing in this position, will be required to walk, stoop, bend, crawl, sit and climb with frequent standing, reaching, stooping, kneeling twisting, and bending.
  • Must be able to lift, pull, push and carry items occasionally weighing more than 25 pounds from one location to another.
  • Employee works primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions of cold and heat with extreme noise and fumes, odor, dust and dirt. On occasion works indoors.
  • Employee must be able to climb steps and stand on ladders or other platforms when required.
  • Employee must have specific vision abilities, to include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Employee must use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects or controls.
  • Employee must be able to shovel snow and remove ice when required.
  • Employee must come in frequent contact with dirt, grass, plants, trees, pollens, pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals and is required to perform many tasks exercising safety precautions.
  • Must be able to work with dangerous equipment and tools such as power lawnmowers, chain saws, snowplows or throwers, and other power equipment.
  • May be called to work days, nights and/or weekends in emergency situations.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work as a team member and be courteous and able to deal effectively with people.
  • Must be cooperative and able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must be able to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to read, write and perform simple mathematical measurements and computations.
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment in prioritizing tasks.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
