Long-Term Substitute Teacher Job Description
The Long-Term Substitute (LTS) Teacher is responsible for the education of each pupil in his or her charge for the duration of the assignment. The Long-Term Substitute is responsible for implementing the pre-planned instruction to a variety of ability levels. The LTS must maintain classroom discipline and routines to the best of their abilities while working with students, parents, other teachers and staff toward achieving the goals set forth in the Prospect Ridge Academy Mission Statements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Implement effective lessons in the absence of the regular Instructor.
- Maintain a positive learning environment and respond to the individual needs of the students.
- Review notes for the day, take attendance, and follow the lesson plans of the teacher.
- Be familiar with fire exits, safety maps/routes, and safety procedures (fire, tornado and lockout/lockdown, etc.).
- Model and foster independent thinking skills, creative problem solving and abstract reasoning.
- Facilitate resolution of problems that might arise with students/parents.
- Promote accountability for students.
- Conduct an organized and professional classroom.
- Show empathy and understanding of students.
- Maintain confidentiality as defined by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Demonstrate the ability to adapt to circumstances. Exhibit good judgment and use appropriate language and behavior while on assignment.
- Remain on duty for the entire assignment, including the planning and duty time of the regular classroom teacher.
- Execute effective classroom management through clear expectations and positive relationships.
- Instructional and technological competency.
- Knowledge of and adherence to approved communication pathways.
- Follow policies established by the Prospect Ridge Academy Board of Directors, Adams 12 School District, and Colorado State mandated school guidelines, except where PRA has received waivers.
- Ensure that PRA policies are observed during all activities.
- Create a safe classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
- Keep all children in the classroom under supervision at all times.
- Abide by state statutes, school board policies and regulations.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, school policy and administrative regulation.
- Leave detailed notes for the teacher on any issues experienced during the day.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Education and Related Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Teaching or Substitute certification required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, conflict management skills, problem solving skills and demonstrated leadership abilities.
- Resourceful in generating creative solutions to problems.
Skills and Abilities- Ability to read, write and interpret various documents such as rules, policy and expectation, agreements, rubrics, scope and sequence documents, and assessment documents.
- Ability to understand and carry out instructions given in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in a variety of situations.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate tasks.
- Ability to work with limited supervision and to be self-motivated.
- Ability and skill to use sound judgment as determined by the specific situation.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Provide backup assistance and coverage for other areas.
- Work is occasionally performed outside with possible exposure to extreme temperatures.
- Work hours may occasionally be extended.

Reporting Relationship
- This position reports to the Elementary School Principal.
- Direct Reports: None.
