Suburban GA Reporter, Inquirer Local

Suburban General Assignment Reporter, Inquirer Local

The Philadelphia Inquirer is hiring a general assignment reporter to cover the Pennsylvania suburbs and play a central role as we grow our Inquirer suburban coverage initiative. We’re looking for a well-rounded reporter who excels at breaking news and enterprise reporting, and is committed to understanding and responding to community news and information needs.

You’ll cover the Philadelphia suburbs with a special focus on specific yet-to-be-identified suburban communities. We want applicants who excel at sourcing, are equally nimble writing news and features, and are open-minded about new story forms and aggregation.

The Suburban GA reporter will join the new Inquirer Local team, which includes two other suburban reporters and two newsletter editors. Your work will be a key piece of our suite of weekly suburban newsletters, as you will be expected to write lead story items and smaller news items for the newsletter. This position is hybrid and based in Greater Philadelphia with many shifts able to be worked either from home or the field. This reporter may live anywhere in the Philly region.

What You’ll Do:

  • Report on breaking news across the suburbs, collaborating with other reporters when needed.
  • Develop a network of sources in suburban communities, and routinely cover news and features out of those communities.
  • Work with a cross-functional team developing experimental hyperlocal news products.
  • Identify what suburban residents are talking about across social media platforms and bring those conversations to our readers.
  • Aggregate news stories that affect the suburbs, with an eye on how to move that story forward.
  • Contribute to live coverage during breaking news and major events in your communities, and help pioneer new ways of bringing those moments to our audience.
  • Contribute to an inclusive and positive work environment

Who We’re Looking For:

  • Early and mid-career reporters with the ability to cover a range of topics and generate creative story ideas.
  • A reporter who values and is committed to community coverage, and engages in dialogue with local readers to understand and meet their needs.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Enthusiasm for on-the-ground reporting. We’re seeking candidates who want to get out there.
  • You must have a driver’s license and the willingness to travel across the region by car.
  • Familiarity with Philadelphia’s suburbs is preferred, but not a prerequisite.
