Summer Student Maintenance Supervisor

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under direct operations supervisors, the purpose of this position is to assist in coordinating and supporting the work of student maintenance workers while also participating in routine maintenance, facility support, and grounds upkeep across school division facilities. The Student Maintenance Supervisor provides leadership and guidance to student workers, helping ensure tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established procedures.

The employee performs routine work with some independence and more complex tasks under the direction and supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor. Work involves assisting with semi-skilled maintenance activities, monitoring assigned tasks, and supporting maintenance and custodial staff with facility repairs and upkeep.

Tasks may involve intermittent physical activity including reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and may require lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling objects and materials. Work may involve lifting moderately heavy objects and materials (20–50 pounds) and occasional assistance with heavier objects under supervision.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists the Maintenance Supervisor in assigning and coordinating daily work tasks for student maintenance workers.

  • Provides guidance, direction, and support to student workers to ensure assigned tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and according to established procedures.

  • Monitors student worker performance and adherence to safety procedures and reports concerns, progress, and completed work to the Maintenance Supervisor.

  • Assists in training student maintenance workers on proper use of tools, equipment, and safe work practices.
  • Assists in coordinating and supervising repairs, preventative maintenance, and servicing of buildings and structures to support the preservation of School Division facilities.

  • Provides guidance to student maintenance workers while assisting with the repair and maintenance of building structures, school and office furniture, door hardware and locks, campus equipment locks, and campus equipment as directed.

  • Assists in monitoring and supporting the maintenance and repair of wooden structures, including windows, roofs, walls, floors, bleachers, decks, desks, chairs, and fences.

  • Supports and helps coordinate facility grounds maintenance activities, including mowing lawns, trimming shrubbery, hedging, and edging.

  • Assists in ensuring the cleanliness and proper organization of facilities, maintenance areas, tools, and equipment.

  • Assists with loading and unloading trucks and coordinating the transportation of supplies, materials, and equipment used for maintenance projects.

  • Monitors the completion of assigned tasks by student workers and reports progress or concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor.

  • Assists with various general maintenance and custodial tasks as needed to support facilities operations.

  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to understand, follow, and direct written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and write English.
  • Ability to operate various handheld and electric repair tools and equipment, e.g., screwdriver, hammer, pliers, level, various saws, electric drills, sewer snakes, masonry tools, various jacks, generators, and welders.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (50 - 100 pounds).
  • Ability to distinguish color and differentiate electrical circuitry (control and line); ability to hear; ability to smell.
  • Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass, and various chemicals

Education / Certifications / Experience

Current High School Student (ages 16 and up) or High School Diploma / GED.

Ages 16 - 18, up to 30 hours per week
Ages 19 and up, 35 - 40 hours per week
