The Department of the Medical Examiner (MED) is seeking a Supervising Medicolegal Investigator in Honolulu. This position is responsible for leading and supervising investigative staff in the investigation of violent, suspicious, and unexplained deaths under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner’s Office. The role ensures adherence to professional standards, policies, and procedures; coordinates with executive and forensic leadership; conducts and oversees complex and high-profile medicolegal death investigations; and mentors, trains, and evaluates subordinate personnel.

What You Will Do
  • Leadership & Supervision: Leads and supervises investigative personnel conducting medicolegal death investigations involving violent, suspicious, accidental, and unexplained deaths. Ensures compliance with professional standards, legal requirements, and departmental policies while mentoring, training, and evaluating staff.

  • Investigation Oversight & Case Management: Oversees and participates in complex and high-profile death investigations, including jurisdiction determinations, scene response, evidence control, decedent identification, next-of-kin notification, and preparation and review of comprehensive investigative reports.

  • Operations & Administrative Management: Manages scheduling, report quality assurance, personnel actions, policy development, payroll and time review, safety oversight, and resource management to ensure effective and accountable section operations.

  • Interagency Coordination & Public Communication: Coordinates with local, state, federal, military, and international agencies; provides court testimony; supports mass fatality and emergency response planning; and serves as a liaison to the public and media to maintain transparency and public trust.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

Special Work Requirements

Health hazards: Exposure to contagious diseases, including an increased risk of certain communicable diseases such as hepatitis and meningitis. Exposure to various chemical and gaseous environments, especially during the investigation of a traffic fatality or at the scene of a fire.

Unpleasantness: Frequently required to be in an enclosed area for long periods of time with decomposed bodies and remains and is thus exposed to putrid odors, insects, insect larva, and other animal vectors associated with decomposing bodies.

Physical hazards: May be required to go directly to the body of the deceased, which is often times located in such remote places as mountain cliffs and terrain, valleys, ravines, and burial caves. May be required to enter smoldering dwellings with exposed electrical wiring and water-soaked and charred floors immediately after a fire. May be required to enter all construction sites where an industrial death has occurred. Must cope with dangerous vehicular traffic for all traffic fatalities. May be required to lift items up to 40-50 pounds.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in forensic science, biological science, nursing, allied health, criminal justice, or a directly related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
:
Four years of progressively responsible professional experience in conducting medicolegal investigations, two of which shall have been representative of the journey level or higher. Such experience must also include, or be supplemented by, work experience demonstrating aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:
  • Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile).
  • Certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) as a Registered Diplomate (certification must be maintained on a current basis thereafter).
