Chartered in 1834, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the largest, busiest, and oldest continuously operating commuter railroad in the United States. In 2024, this 24/7/365 operation served 75.5 million riders on a system that stretches nearly 120 miles – from Penn Station and Grand Central Madison in Manhattan to Montauk on the eastern tip of Long Island.

JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible to run the daily operations of the MW (Maintenance of Way) Repair Shop. This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all LIRR equipment and machinery as directed. The Supervisor-MW Machinery is required to enforce company policy, local, state, and federal mandated rules and regulations, as well as ensuring that all repairs are in accordance with manufacturers, Standard Automotive Equipment (SAE), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)Association of American Railroads(AAR)and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performance of qualification testing of employees on MW (Maintenance of Way) machinery.
  • Plan and coordinate maintenance and repairs of Long Island Railroad machinery, wayside lubricators, generators, MW Rolling Stock and draw and swing bridges.
  • Enforce the provisions of Labor Agreements ensuring communication of same to employees.
  • Inspect the quality and progress of machinery repair work and advise the Engineer-Track Operations of the status of this work.
  • Develop and execute plans and programs to improve work methods and to utilize new types of equipment in mechanized track work.
  • Participate in the layout and planning of machinery maintenance programs and field maintenance programs for project work.
  • Provide mechanical support as directed for other departments.
  • Lead safety meetings as per policy and conduct regular safety audits.
  • Investigate on-the-job accidents for cause and prevention.
  • Provide emergency lighting as directed.
  • Administer test and evaluations for new MW (Maintenance of Way) Mechanics and Structural Welders.
  • Review individual employee attendance records and expense accounts to ensure conformance with company policies.
  • Review time and payroll reports for accuracy.
  • Monitor spare parts and material usage to ensure proper inventory control.
  • Review vehicle and fleet records for usage and accuracy.
  • Conduct training sessions on technical as well as safety issues.
  • Attend company meetings as directed.


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Must possess one of the following three:
    • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and four years engineering/railroad related experience. OR
    • Approximately 8years recent experience in supervision AND administration of MW or construction machinery repairs.
  • Must possess extensive knowledge in hydraulics, diesel and gasoline engines, electronics, structural welding, and wayside lubrication.
  • Must have a satisfactory work record (including attendance and discipline).
  • Demonstrate willingness to assume and handle responsibility.
  • Must be able to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Must possess proficient computer skills.
  • Must have valid driver's license.

OTHER INFORMATION:
  • Actual salary offers may vary based on individual work experience. The annual salary range is subject to change and may be modified at the company’s discretion.
  • Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MTA drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.

  • LIRR: In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written, and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make-up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of the last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance. Not all qualified applicants are guaranteed an interview due to the competitive selection process. A medical examination and safety-sensitive drug/alcohol test may also be required.
