Tax Manager (Public Accounting) – Remote

Officially apply at: https://www.cartercookcpas.com/tax-manager-application/

Who we are

Carter Cook CPAs is a fast-growing public accounting firm that specializes in the beauty industry — salons and medspas across the country. We run a subscription-based model, which means our clients pay a flat monthly retainer for bookkeeping, tax, and advisory services. No billing by the hour. No chasing invoices. Just consistent, high-quality work for clients who are genuinely grateful for it.

We're also a technology-first firm. We actively integrate AI tools into our workflows — not as a gimmick, but as a real lever for doing better work faster. We're looking for someone who shares that mindset.

We're growing fast and the tax department is a core part of how we get there.

The role

We need a Tax Manager who takes full ownership of the tax department — pipeline, team, client calls, and quality. Not someone who manages when asked. Someone who manages because they can't help it.

Here's the thing: the person who thrives here will have a high standard for their own work and an even higher standard for their team's. They'll catch problems before they become emergencies. They'll run tax planning calls that clients actually look forward to. And they'll build a department that doesn't need the owner to check in on it.

That's the job.

What you'll own

Tax return review and quality control. You'll oversee preparation and review across individual, S-Corp, partnership, and trust returns. You're the last line of defense before anything goes to a client.

Team leadership and development. We have two senior-level tax preparers. You'll train them, hold them accountable, and build them into better professionals. If someone on your team is struggling, you'll know before it becomes a problem.

Pipeline management. You'll own the deadline calendar. You'll know where every return stands at any point in the intake window — not because someone told you, but because you built the system to track it.

Tax planning calls. You'll lead proactive tax planning meetings with clients over Zoom. Our clients are small business owners, not accountants. Your job is to make complex tax decisions feel clear and manageable.

AI integration and workflow efficiency. We use AI tools today and we're actively building out how we use them. You'll be expected to understand where AI fits in the tax workflow, use it to make your team more efficient, and bring ideas for how we can do more with the tools available. You'll need to maintain appropriate professional skepticism to AI responses and keep client data security at the forefront of all processes. Curiosity and a willingness to experiment are required. Fear of AI is a dealbreaker.

Process improvement. We're a growing firm. The processes we have today won't be the processes we need in two years. We want someone who sees that as an opportunity, not a headache.

What we're looking for

Active CPA license — required.

Minimum 7 years of public accounting experience — required.

Experience signing tax returns — required.

Bachelor's degree in Accounting required. Master's in Taxation or Accounting preferred.

Experience managing and developing direct reports — required. Not just supervising. Actually developing people.

Comfortable with fully remote work. We're a remote team and that's not changing. The right person has figured out how to work well remotely and has the discipline and communication habits to prove it.

Genuinely curious about AI and technology. You don't need to be an expert, but you need to be someone who leans in rather than opts out. If you've never experimented with AI tools in your tax work, this probably isn't the right fit.

Experience with small-business clients across multiple states — required.

Preferred tools: UltraTax CS, TaxDome, QuickBooks Online, Google Workspace, Excel, AI-assisted tax research tools.

Compensation and benefits

Base salary: $130,000 – $145,000 depending on experience.

Annual performance bonus tied to tax department revenue. If the firm hits its growth targets, your bonus doubles. This isn't a token bonus — it's a meaningful part of your total compensation and it grows as the department grows.

Health, dental, and vision insurance.

401(k) with 4% company match.

4 weeks PTO and 9 paid holidays.

Monthly internet reimbursement.

CPE reimbursement.

Annual team retreat.

Why this role

Most Tax Manager roles put you in charge of a department that's already built. This one puts you in charge of co-building it.

You'll have real autonomy, a leadership team that stays out of your way when things are running well, and direct visibility into how your work impacts the firm's growth. When the firm wins, you win — that's what the bonus structure is designed to reflect.

If you want a role where you can see your fingerprints on something that's genuinely growing — and you're excited about what AI can do for the accounting profession rather than threatened by it — this is it.
