Job Purpose:
  • The Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments at LIGHTHOUSE CENTRAL FLORIDA INC is dedicated to providing specialized educational services to students with visual impairments. The role involves developing and implementing individualized education plans that cater to the unique learning needs of each student, ensuring they receive a comprehensive and accessible education. The teacher will work collaboratively with families, educators, and other professionals to foster an inclusive learning environment that promotes the academic, social, and emotional development of students with visual impairments.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement individualized education plans for students with visual impairments, tailoring instruction to meet their specific needs.
  • Utilize specialized teaching strategies and materials to facilitate learning and accessibility for students with visual impairments.
  • Collaborate with families, educators, and other professionals to create an inclusive educational environment.
  • Conduct assessments to monitor student progress and adjust teaching methods accordingly.
  • Provide guidance and support to students in developing independent living skills and self-advocacy.
  • Stay informed about the latest advancements in assistive technology and incorporate relevant tools into the classroom.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and knowledge in the field of visual impairment education.
  • Advocate for the needs of students with visual impairments within the school and community.
Required Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Special Education, or a related field.
  • Certification in teaching students with visual impairments is preferred.

Required Experience:
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with students with visual impairments.
  • Experience in developing and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs).
  • Proven track record of collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to support student learning.

Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of Braille and other tactile learning methods.
  • Ability to adapt teaching materials and strategies to accommodate visual impairments.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Proficiency in using assistive technology and tools designed for visually impaired students.
  • Demonstrated patience, empathy, and commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment.
