The Teaching Assistant will provide academic, laboratory, and instructional support across multiple courses. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
1. Teaching & Tutorial Support
- Conduct tutorials, recitations, problem-solving sessions, and guided practice.
- Hold regular office hours to support student learning and provide clarification of lecture materials.
- Attend selected lectures and meet with course instructors for ongoing coordination.
- Assist students with theory–practice integration through structured problem sets and active-learning exercises.
2. Laboratory Demonstration & Management
- Manage, operate, set up, and maintain laboratory equipment and resources.
- Conduct lab demonstrations and support students in performing experiments safely.
- Prepare laboratory materials such as manuals, problem sheets, handouts, and instructions.
- Develop new active-learning lab tools, including open-ended experiments, design challenges, and simulated laboratory experiences.
- Maintain laboratory safety, inventory, and readiness for teaching.
3. Assessment & Course Administration
- Assist instructors in grading assignments, quizzes and lab reports with confidentiality and accuracy.
- Maintain course grade records in Blackboard and regularly update instructors.
- Support exam proctoring, assignment review, and continuous assessment processes.
- Provide structured feedback on student performance and learning issues.
4. Student Mentoring & Academic Support
- Support student groups working on projects, competitions, workshops, fieldwork, or industrial visits.
- Assist in guiding senior design teams and project-based learning activities.
- Help students develop engineering design skills, computational competencies, and experimental approaches.
5. Research & Scholarly Support
- Participate in research activities with faculty when required.
- Assist in data collection, experimental setup, literature review, or preliminary analysis under supervision.
6. Service to Department, College, and University
- Support departmental initiatives, outreach activities, and community engagement events.
- Assist with program accreditation tasks, data compilation, and documentation for ABET and QU assessment cycles.
- Help prepare and update manuals, guidelines, surveys, and feedback instruments for courses and labs.
- Contribute to departmental marketing, student engagement, and academic quality improvement activities.
Qualifications
Required
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from a reputable institution.- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum of two (2) years of university-level experience as a Teaching Assistant, Lab Instructor, or equivalent academic instructional role.
- Strong foundation in major Mechanical Engineering subjects such as statics, dynamics, solid mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, machine design, vibrations, manufacturing, automation, and control.
- Experience conducting tutorials, laboratory sessions, grading, and student instructional support.
- Excellent English communication skills (written and oral).
- Familiarity with educational technologies such as Blackboard, and engineering software commonly used in ME courses.
Highly Desirable Skills
o CAD/CAE tools (SolidWorks, CATIA, ANSYS, etc.)
o MATLAB/Simulink
o Data acquisition and control software
- Hands-on experience with:
o 3D printers
o CNC machines
o Sensors and actuators
o Data acquisition systems
o Robotics and automation equipment
- Ability to work with multicultural student groups and maintain safe, well-organized laboratory environments.
- Experience supporting course development, accreditation documentation (ABET), or instructional improvement initiatives.
