Technical Staff Engineer

TL;DR: Dosu is pushing the boundaries of what coding agents are capable of and we want to maintain our place at the forefront of LLM utility and innovation. We are hiring for highly technical engineers who want to build alongside a world-class team of like-minded engineers. If you're excited about tackling complex problems end-to-end, we should talk.

The Team

  • We are a small passionate team of ex-founders, repeat founding engineers, and OSS maintainers

  • We like to delight users

  • We care about building an enduring business—we are not a research lab

  • We have an office in San Francisco in-between Hayes Valley, Mission, and Castro

What We Look For

  • You want to solve problems end-to-end: Our team is split vertically, so every engineer owns a part of the product and needs to make decisions across the LLM pipeline, infrastructure, backend, and UX (with help!).

  • You have a high bar for quality: In a startup, moving fast is essential. But even more important is to care about your output, obsess about details, and build a product that works, especially in the time of AI. Slop compounds!

  • You want to push LLM capabilities: We continually push the most advanced AI models to their limits and work with the foundational companies on their new releases.

  • You are a clear thinker and communicator: We only have one meeting a week and expect you to communicate tradeoffs, problems, and blockers directly.

  • You are highly technical and can keep up with our technical team: Most of our team has started coding as young teenagers and nerd out on details from language design to compilers. Our technical team is comprised of PhDs, repeat exited CTOs, and published authors.

The Process

Interviewing is hard. We aim to keep the interview process relatively succinct (1-3 weeks end-to-end), topical to what you’d be working on at Dosu, and—as much as possible—enjoyable.

1. Intro Call (30 minutes / Google Meet)

A casual 30 minute video call to

  • Learn more about you, your background, and what you are looking for next

  • Learn more about Dosu, where we are, where we are going

  • Align on how you might fit into the team

2. Take-Home Coding Challenge (1-2 hours)

Open-book, take-home python coding challenge. We'll share a GitHub repository with you and the goal is to create a PR to implement a feature. This is not a LeetCode or HackerRank type problem. It's meant to be as emblematic of day-to-day work as much as possible and usually takes around an hour, but we give you two hours.

If you have any significant contributions to OSS, please let us know and share with us. We will take OSS contributions into account when reviewing the challenge.

3. Code Review (45 minutes / Google Meet)

Review your PR from the coding challenge with a team member like you would any PR at work.

The goal is to discuss your approach to solving the problem, including any decisions you made and their tradeoffs, and use this as a launching point for deeper technical discussions.

4. Onsite (3 hours / In-Person)

Come to our office at 1841 Market St, meet the team, and discuss what it might take to build a product like Dosu.

The onsite interviews are high-level and do not require additional coding.
