Job Summary

The Technical Writer (Contract) is responsible for developing clear, structured, and accurate process documentation for municipal utility CIS/ERP systems. This role focuses on creating practical “how-to” guides that explain not only system functions, but how those functions operate within real-world workflows, configurations, and business processes.

The writer must translate complex system behavior, configuration logic, and cross-module interactions into documentation that is usable by Professional Services, Customer Support, and end users.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop step-by-step process guides that explain how to execute operational workflows within the system

  • Document configuration-dependent behavior (e.g., rate structures, billing parameters, GL mappings, permissions)

  • Capture cross-module workflows (e.g., meter read billing financial posting reporting)

  • Explain the business purpose behind system steps, not just the mechanics

  • Document edge cases, common failure modes, and troubleshooting checkpoints

  • Collaborate with R&D, Professional Services, and Level 3 Support to validate technical accuracy

  • Create documentation that accounts for both core functionality and customer-specific customizations

  • Standardize documentation structure and terminology across departments

  • Revise and maintain documentation in alignment with product releases

Required Skills & Experience

Technical & Domain Knowledge

  • Experience documenting ERP, CIS, financial, or enterprise software systems

  • Ability to understand relational database concepts and system configuration structures

  • Familiarity with billing workflows, financial postings (GL/AP/AR), and transactional systems

  • Ability to read and interpret technical discussions, SQL queries, and configuration settings

  • Comfort working with partially documented or legacy systems

Process & Analytical Skills

  • Strong systems thinking — understands how configuration, workflow, and data interact

  • Ability to reconstruct end-to-end operational processes from interviews, testing, and observation

  • Skilled at identifying assumptions, dependencies, and configuration-sensitive behaviour

  • Ability to distinguish between product functionality and customer-specific configuration

Communication Skills

  • Exceptional written communication skills (non-negotiable)

  • Clear, structured, professional English suitable for American municipal end users

  • Ability to translate complex technical behavior into accessible operational guidance

  • Strong interviewing skills to extract knowledge from subject matter experts

  • Ability to organize content logically and consistently across documents

Documentation Competencies

  • Experience creating structured documentation (process guides, SOPs, configuration guides, reference materials)

  • Ability to design documentation that supports both training and operational execution

  • Familiarity with Markdown, documentation repositories, or structured knowledge bases preferred

  • Strong editing and revision discipline
