PURPOSE:
This role is responsible for performing field operations, inspections, maintenance, and repair activities to ensure the safe and efficient functioning of sewage and stormwater networks. It involves hands-on work, operation of specialized equipment, supporting emergency interventions, and ensuring compliance with safety standards and operational procedures.
ROLES & RESPOSIBILITIES:
- Conduct routine and preventive maintenance on sewer and drainage pipelines, manholes, chambers, pumping lines, and related assets.
- Operate maintenance equipment such as jetting machines, vacuum tankers, CCTV inspection robots, pumps, and dewatering systems.
- Assist in locating and clearing blockages, removing debris, sediment, roots, and other obstructions from pipelines.
- Perform manhole inspections, identify structural defects, infiltration, surcharging, odor complaints, or operational issues.
- Support corrective maintenance and minor repairs including cover replacement, chamber cleaning, and pipe section repairs.
- Document field activities through checklists, work orders, and photographic evidence.
- Respond promptly to sewer blockages, overflows, flooding incidents, pipe collapses, and urgent network failures.
- Implement temporary bypass pumping, flow diversion, and safety measures during emergencies.
- Assist engineers and supervisors in emergency root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Safely operate and maintain tools and machinery such as:
- Confined space entry equipment
- Perform daily equipment checks and report defects or malfunctions.
- Follow all HSE procedures, especially for confined space entry, working at height, traffic diversion, and hazardous gas environments.
- Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to safety guidelines.
- Conduct site preparation including barricading, signage, and public safety measures.
- Update work orders in the CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
- Report unusual findings, asset defects, and potential network risks to the supervisor.
- Coordinate with engineers, contractors, and other field teams to support network operations.
Experience:
- 2–5 years experience in drainage or wastewater network maintenance, utilities, or heavy field operations.
Competencies:
- Knowledge of sewer and drainage network components (pipelines, manholes, chambers, connections, laterals).
- Ability to read basic utility maps, plans, and GIS layouts.
- Skilled in using drainage maintenance equipment and tools.
- Familiarity with CMMS and basic reporting procedures.
- Understanding of safe working practices and environmental compliance.
Education:
- Diploma or Technical Certificate in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Water/Wastewater Technology, or related field.
