Position Overview

The Art Instructor is responsible for leading engaging and accessible art classes for children, teens, and adults. This position supports the creative and cultural well-being of participants by fostering imagination, self-expression, and skill development through a variety of art mediums.

Ideal candidates will bring a background in visual arts instruction and a passion for helping others explore their creativity in a supportive and inspiring environment. Morning availability is required for this role.


What You Should Bring

We’re looking for a creative, patient, and dependable instructor who can inspire participants of all ages and skill levels. The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience teaching art in group settings (schools, recreation centers, or studios)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of a range of artistic mediums (painting, drawing, crafts, or mixed media)
  • Adapt lessons to meet the needs of different ages, abilities, and interests
  • Exhibit professionalism, organization, and enthusiasm for arts education
  • Encourage exploration, confidence, and self-expression in participants
  • Be comfortable with tracking attendance and managing program logistics

About the Department

The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) delivers inclusive programs, maintains high-quality public spaces, and promotes wellness across Alexandria. RPCA is a nationally accredited agency through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), recognized for excellence in meeting over 150 best practice standards.


Minimum & Additional Requirements

Associate Degree and four (4) years of experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree or certification in Fine Arts, Arts Education, or related field
  • CPR and First Aid certification
  • Experience working with children, teens, and adults in community-based settings
  • Knowledge of diverse art forms and culturally relevant teaching practices

Scheduling Notes
Morning availability is required. Classes may be scheduled on weekday mornings with potential for afternoon, evening, or weekend sessions based on program needs. A consistent schedule will be established based on participant demand and instructor availability.
