Teradata SQL

  • Should be working in client business hours
  • Analyze and tune complex Teradata SQL using EXPLAIN plans, DBQL, and Viewpoint to improve query response times and reduce CPU, I/O, and spool usage.
  • Identify inefficient access paths, excessive redistributions, product joins, and skewed AMP processing; redesigned queries to maximize parallelism.
  • Develop and execute statistics strategies (single-column, multi-column, and incremental stats) to improve optimizer plans and stabilize query performance.
  • Optimize join strategies (merge, hash, nested) by reordering joins, applying early filters, and eliminating unnecessary tables and derived steps.
  • Recommend and implement Primary Index (PI) and composite PI changes to resolve data skew and improve AMP distribution.
  • Designed and tune partitioning strategies (PPI) to enable partition elimination and reduce full-table scans.
  • Reduce excessive spool consumption by rewriting SQL, materializing intermediate results using volatile/global temporary tables, and limiting column selection.
  • Rewrite inefficient SQL patterns, including subqueries, IN vs EXISTS, function-based predicates, and nested queries, to improve performance and scalability.
  • Tune large INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE operations to minimize locking, logging overhead, and single-AMP processing.
  • Collaborated with DBAs, developers, and data architects to resolve performance incidents and meet SLA requirements.
  • Document tuning recommendations, standards, and best practices for ongoing performance optimization.
