About Sightsavers
Sightsavers is an international organisation that works in more than more than 30 countries to prevent avoidable blindness and fight for the rights of people with disabilities. Our vision is of a world where no one is blind from avoidable causes, and where people with disabilities can participate equally in society. Sightsavers has been operating in Pakistan since 1985 and subsequently established a formal country presence in 1998. With the objective of developing eye care for the poorest people in both urban and rural areas, Sightsavers has been providing preventive services as well as a full range of treatments. Our work in Pakistan focuses on strengthening eye health systems, promoting inclusive education systems, and accessible community development solutions.
Project Overview
Sightsavers is implementing the School Health Integrated Programme in two districts of Gilgit Baltistan. The current project addresses the challenge of Uncorrected Refractive Error (URE) amongst children enrolled in public schools of Gilgit and Nagar. The project aims to identify children (aged 5 to 18 years) with eye conditions in schools and address them through the provision of services such as eye examination, including refraction, glasses, low vision devices, and surgical treatments.
Many children have already been provided with screening, refractive, and corrective glasses. In addition, a large number of teachers have also been trained on the primary vision screening.
