Job Purpose
To perform high-quality TIG and ARC welding on pipes, structural steel, and fabricated components in accordance with approved welding procedures, drawings, and project specifications, ensuring safe, reliable, and defect-free welds.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, isometrics, P&IDs, WPS, and material specifications.
- Perform TIG (GTAW) and ARC (SMAW) welding on:
- Carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy materials
- Pipes, plates, structural frames, skids, tanks, supports, etc.
- Prepare joint edges: cutting, grinding, beveling, fit-up, tack welding as per WPS.
- Set up and operate welding machines, including:
- Selection of correct electrodes, filler rods, gas type and flow, and machine settings
- Performing test welds and adjustments before production welding
- Ensure weld quality:
- Follow WPS parameters (amps, volts, travel speed, preheat, interpass temp, etc.)
- Visually inspect welds for defects (undercut, porosity, lack of fusion, etc.)
- Support NDT (RT, UT, PT, MPI) and repair any rejected welds as directed.
- Perform welding in all positions (1G–6G / flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead) as required by the job.
- Coordinate with fitters, fabricators, and supervisors to meet daily production targets.
- Maintain housekeeping of work area, tools, and welding machines.
- Follow all HSE requirements, including:
- Use of correct PPE (helmet, gloves, goggles, safety shoes, fire-retardant clothing, etc.)
- Ensuring proper ventilation and fire safety in welding areas
- Reporting near misses, unsafe conditions, and incidents.
- Complete daily job cards, time sheets, and weld traceability records as required.
- Take care of company tools, equipment and report any damage or malfunction.
- Perform any other related duties assigned by the Supervisor / Foreman.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong hands-on skills in TIG & ARC welding for pipes and structural steel.
- Ability to read drawings and follow WPS without constant supervision.
- Good understanding of weld joint preparation, fit-up, and distortion control.
- Familiarity with different electrodes and filler materials (e.g., E6010, E7018, stainless rods, etc.).
- Knowledge of basic NDT acceptance criteria and common welding defects.
- Ability to weld in confined spaces and at height (where required).
- Strong focus on safety, quality, and productivity.
- Basic communication skills in English (reading weld maps, instructions, safety signs).
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum Education: High school / Secondary or equivalent (preferred).
- Technical Training:
- Certified TIG & ARC Welder from a recognized technical institute / training center.
- Experience:
- years of experience as a TIG & ARC Welder in workshop or site environment (oil & gas, power plant, fabrication shop, construction, or similar).
- Experience in pipe welding and pressure parts is an advantage.
- Valid welding qualification certificates (e.g., 6G, ASME/ISO codes) are a strong plus.
