Position Details


Job Summary

The Technician II performs preventative maintenance and advanced repairs on tractor and trailer units. You ensure all work meets Koch Companies and DOT standards. You also support inventory control and complete required order paperwork.


Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain Company equipment and facilities including keeping them in good, clean, orderly condition.
  • Practice safe work habits by adhering to all Koch Companies policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and advanced repairs, including all skills from Tractor Tech I checklist, plus:
  • DOT Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable State and Federal regulations, conducting regular inspections and repairs.
  • Suspension: Front springs/spring pins, Rear springs, Air bags/leveling valves/torque arm
  • Driveline: U-joints/carrier bearing/axle shaft, Differential reseal/replacement, Troubleshooting power divider air/electrical, Seal/gaskets/yoke replacement
  • Fifth Wheel: Rebuild, Troubleshooting electrical/air, Replacement, Slider cylinder/pins, Fontaine slider rear cross member, Jaw release cylinder and troubleshooting
  • AC: Troubleshooting electrical/pressures, Compressor/condenser/expansion valve/evap. core/pressure switches/receiver drier, Blend door motor/HVAC control panel
  • Heating: Radiator/heater core/water pump/tstat/block heater, Troubleshooting coolant flow issues/pressure testing
  • Fan Clutch: Troubleshooting electrical/air, Hub/clutch/switch replacement

  • Starting/Charging Systems Troubleshooting & Repairs
  • CEL Troubleshooting
  • ABS/Collision Mitigation Troubleshooting
  • Lights/Electrical Troubleshooting & Repairs
  • Air Brake Troubleshooting & Repairs (caliper/rotor/slack adjuster/air valves)
  • Steering Troubleshooting & Repairs (tie rod ends, Drag links, steer shaft, gears, pumps)
  • Aftertreatment: Sensors/DEF system, DPF
  • Exhaust: Leaks, Exhaust manifold
  • APU: A/C troubleshooting and repair, Alternator/electrical troubleshooting and repair, Engine mounts, Espar troubleshooting and repair
  • Complete general repairs on all tractors within the company or for customers of the company.
  • Order necessary parts to repair the equipment from the parts department or parts may be on-site and are carried or dollied to the work area.
  • Dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools and will examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
  • Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Maintain clean work area including spraying down vehicles, sweeping, etc. is completed as needed.
  • Make warranty recommendations..

  • Serve as a representative of the Company, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration, and discretion in all interactions with other members of the Koch community, customers and with the public.
  • Cross training as required.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.

  • Temperature-controlled shop with frequent open doors.
  • Exposure to loud machine noise and strong maintenance fluid odors.

Qualifications


Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years of tractor maintenance experience.
  • Ability to independently complete advanced repairs.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Associate degree (AAS) in Heavy Duty Truck Technology or related field.
  • 3+ years of tractor maintenance experience.
  • Ability to independently complete advanced repairs.


Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills.
  • Proficient computer skills for maintenance documentation.
  • Certification in ABS brake systems.
  • Skilled in using diagnostic and computerized instrumentation.
  • Ability to maintain professional conduct and grooming standards.
  • Ability to become Minnesota State Certified for DOT inspections.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills across all organizational levels.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move up to 50 pounds or more.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, climbing in/out, under, and over semi-trucks.
  • Sufficient hearing to detect alarms, equipment noise, and verbal communication in a loud environment.
  • Sufficient vision (corrected or uncorrected) to read small print, technical documents, and assemble small parts.
  • Ability to meet all safety requirements.
