AREA OF ASSIGNMENT: HVAC
High school diploma with vocational training required; supplemented by five years of experience in carpentry, electrical wiring, HVAC, electronic systems, plumbing, welding, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Specific License or Certification Required: Must be licensed or possess industrial and commercial certification in the assigned field and possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performing the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position. Able to read and understand blueprints, diagrams, and schematics helpful.

Performs operational duties related to repairing and maintaining heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems at County governmental facilities. Responsibilities include inspecting, repairing, and monitoring HVAC systems; operating recovery equipment; and performing preventative maintenance.

Leadership Under Pressure: Quickly identifies critical HVAC issues that impact safety, comfort, or operations; Directs junior staff or contractors during high-pressure repair situations; Demonstrates steady, dependable leadership when systems fail or deadlines tighten.
Operational Planning and Execution: Plans and executes routine HVAC inspections to prevent breakdowns; Organizes tasks, tracks progress, and ensures timely completion of service requests; Evaluates HVAC efficiency and identifies opportunities for improvement.
Adaptability and Rapid Problem Solving: Troubleshoots electrical, mechanical, and airflow issues quickly and accurately; Finds practical fixes when parts are unavailable or conditions are challenging; Adapts to updated HVAC systems, smart controls, and energy-efficient equipment.
Team Cohesion and Communication: Explains HVAC issues and repair steps to supervisors, coworkers, and non-technical staff; Works with electricians, plumbers, and other trades to resolve multi-system problems; Provides guidance on safe practices, diagnostic methods, and equipment handling.
Safety and Risk Awareness: Identifies risks such as refrigerant leaks, electrical hazards, and poor ventilation; Uses ladders, power tools, and refrigerant equipment safely and responsibly; Responds appropriately to overheating units, smoke, or system shutdowns.
Technical and Equipment Proficiency: Understands heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration systems across multiple building types; Uses gauges, meters, leak detectors, and digital controls effectively; Performs component replacement, wiring repairs, motor servicing, and airflow adjustments; Equipment installation and calibration — Installs units, calibrates thermostats, and ensures systems operate within specifications.
