The City of Wentzville is seeking a skilled and motivated Traffic Technician II to join our Public Works team. This position serves as a working crew leader responsible for the ongoing operation, maintenance, and repair of city street signs, road markings, and traffic signals. The ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership in the field, ensuring that all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with City policies and standards.
Essential Job Duties

Lead and participate in daily field operations related to traffic control systems, including signs, signals, and road markings.

Provide respectful, professional, and positive customer service in all interactions with co-workers, City staff, and the public.

Maintain a safe and productive work environment that aligns with City and departmental policies, procedures, and goals.

Repair, fabricate, and install traffic signs and signals as needed.
-
Investigate and resolve complaints or reports of malfunctioning signals; perform adjustments and minor repairs.

Set up and maintain proper work zones with barricades, cones, and warning devices to ensure traffic control and crew safety.

Utilize computer software to design and produce traffic signs and stay updated on regulations and standards for traffic control devices.

Paint and maintain street and parking lot markings (e.g., lines, arrows, stop bars) ensuring visibility and compliance.

Inspect, maintain, and coordinate traffic signals to ensure proper operation throughout the City.

Maintain and repair large, portable LED message boards, streetlights, and solar panels.

Use electronic locating equipment to mark City electrical and fiber utilities for safe excavation.

Maintain detailed records of all signage work for inventory, insurance, and reporting purposes.

Monitor and manage sign and paint inventories; assist with budgeting.

Participate in winter operations on a 24-hour call basis, including snow plowing and salt spreading.

Promote and enforce adherence to all safety procedures and policies.
Ancillary Job Duties

Follow all departmental and City policies, procedures, and operational standards.

Provide regular progress updates on assigned tasks and projects.

Monitor work sites for hazards and report safety concerns.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications – Education, experience, and training that are required or desirable in order to effectively perform the job at the time of hire. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements and/or substitutions may be requested and require the approval of HR.

Minimum of 3 years of experience in traffic signal maintenance, street maintenance, or related experience required.

Job-relevant certification/license, vocational/technical program completion, or completion of apprenticeship preferred.
- Certifications preferred, or ability to obtain within 180 days of employment required:

Class B CDL
-
IMSA (Sign, Marking, Signal, Work Zone)

Bucket Truck
- Valid driver’s license required.

Working knowledge of Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation.

Knowledge of tools, methods, materials, equipment, and terminology used in construction and maintenance of street and traffic control facilities.

Knowledge of concrete placement and finishing methods, slump, and strength testing with related training.
