Trailer Mechanic

Job Description: Trailer Mechanic

Position Summary

The Trailer Mechanic is responsible for performing maintenance, inspection, and repairs on company trailers to ensure safe and efficient operation in compliance with FMCSA regulations. This position focuses on trailer systems such as brakes, suspension, electrical, lights, and structural components. Training will be provided to expand into truck repairs and diagnostics, offering a path toward a Truck & Trailer Mechanic role.

Essential Job Functions

  • Perform preventative maintenance and general repairs on trailers, including brakes, suspension, lighting, landing gear, doors, and flooring.
  • Conduct DOT inspections and ensure compliance with FMCSA regulations.
  • Diagnose mechanical and structural issues using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Perform welding, cutting, and fabrication as required.
  • Complete all assigned work orders within established Standard Repair Time (SRT) guidelines while maintaining safety and quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure all work areas and equipment are maintained in a safe, clean, and organized condition and dispose of waste materials properly.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development to learn truck maintenance and repair procedures.

Work Environment and Role Expectations

  • Work performed primarily in a shop environment.
  • Exposure to moving vehicles, heavy equipment, noise, grease, fumes and various weather conditions.
  • Some repairs will be performed off site including at customer locations, or roadside as business needs require.
  • Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Responsible for maintaining personal tools and ensuring all company tools or equipment used are properly handled, cleaned and returned after each job.
  • Expected to follow all company, OSHA, and FMCSA regulations.
  • Work hours may include some weekends or after-hours shifts as operational needs require.

Cognitive, Physical, and Communication Requirements

  • Ability to analyze mechanical problems and determine appropriate repair solutions.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, and lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Good hand eye coordination and attention to detail are required to safely and accurately perform mechanical repairs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, coworkers, and drivers.
  • Must be able to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and safety documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous mechanical or maintenance experience preferred but not required.
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop new mechanical skills through on the job training.
  • Basic understanding of trailer systems (brakes, lighting, suspension, etc.).
  • Personal tools preferred but not required. Company can provide tools on loan; employees are expected to gradually build their own tool set over time.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company driving standards.
  • Commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous learning.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16.00 - $17.00 per hour
