Job Title: Trailer Operator (Heavy Equipment Transporter)
Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled and reliable Trailer Operator to safely transport heavy machinery, construction materials, and oversized loads using multi-axle trailers (Flatbed, Lowboy, or Multi-Axle Hydraulic Trailers). The ideal candidate must have extensive experience in maneuvering heavy articulated vehicles, securing complex cargo, and navigating diverse road conditions. A valid heavy-duty driving license and a clean safety record are essential for this role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Vehicle Operation: Drive and maneuver heavy-duty tractor units with various trailer attachments (Flatbeds, Lowboys, Extendables) in urban and off-road environments.
- Loading & Unloading: Safely drive or winch heavy equipment (excavators, dozers, cranes) onto trailers, ensuring weight is distributed according to axle limits.
- Cargo Securement: Apply chains, binders, straps, and tensioning devices to secure loads, ensuring zero movement during transit.
- Route Planning: Conduct pre-trip route surveys to identify height restrictions (bridges), weight-limited roads, and tight turns for oversized loads.
- Vehicle Inspection: Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the tractor and trailer, focusing on air brakes, tire pressure, coupling devices (fifth wheel), and lights.
- Pilot Car Coordination: Work in tandem with escort vehicles and pilot cars when transporting "Super-Loads" or wide-gauge equipment.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate Driver Logs (ELD), delivery notes, fuel receipts, and trip reports in compliance with transport regulations.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all traffic laws, speed limits, and site-specific safety protocols, including the use of PPE during loading/unloading.
- Defect Reporting: Identify mechanical issues and coordinate with the workshop for repairs to prevent breakdowns during transit.
Requirements:
- Licensing: Valid Heavy Vehicle Driving License (e.g., Class A CDL with Double/Triple Trailer endorsement or local equivalent).
- Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of experience in heavy haulage, specifically with low-bed or multi-axle trailers.
- Technical Knowledge: Proficient in load distribution math and understanding "bridge formulas" to prevent axle overloading.
- Securement Certification: Knowledge of DOT/local cargo securement standards and winch operations.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to handle heavy chains and binders, and work in various weather conditions.
- Safety Mindset: A "zero-accident" approach with a history of safe driving and cargo handling.
Skills:
- Exceptional Maneuvering: Advanced skills in reversing, tight-space positioning, and managing articulated vehicle "off-tracking."
- Mechanical Aptitude: Basic knowledge of diesel engines and trailer pneumatic/hydraulic systems.
- Spatial Judgment: Precise ability to judge clearances for overhead obstructions and narrow passages.
- Effective Communication: Clear coordination with site marshals and transport dispatchers.
