Position Summary

Grant County is seeking qualified second- and third-year students to intern with the Grant County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office as a Licensed Legal Intern (Rule 9). The licensed legal intern would receive the opportunity for mentorship and training while being provided invaluable experience in the Washington legal system, potentially in both criminal and civil divisions. The Grant County Prosecutor’s Office is committed to building a collegial and effective team through mentorship and training which values justice, community safety, and the ethical practice of law.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following examples of duties and accountabilities illustrate the general range of tasks assigned to the position but are not intended to define the limits of required duties. Other essential duties may be assigned consistent with the general scope of the position. Employee must comply with all County and department policies, procedures, WAC’s, or other regulatory bodies.

  • Perform legal work under the direction of a supervising attorney, who will direct, supervise, and review all of the work of the legal intern and shall assume personal professional responsibility for any work done by the legal intern while under the lawyer's supervision.
  • Legal work under the supervising attorney may include being responsible for every aspect of criminal prosecution at the District Court level. This includes case investigation, witness interviews, negotiations, brief writing, arraignments, pretrial motions, trial preparation, bench trials, jury trials, sentencing, and probation reviews. The intern will cover regular calendars that are set by the court and spend out of court time preparing upcoming cases.
  • All activities authorized by Washington Admission to Practice Rule 9.
  • Any and all additional legal tasks assigned, under the direction of a supervising attorney.

Required
  • Submit evidence satisfactory to the Prosecuting Attorney of minimum Admission to Practice Rule 9 Eligibility requirements.
  • Submit evidence satisfactory to the Prosecuting Attorney of compliance with all mandatory rules pursuant to the Admission to Practice Rule 9 and the Rules of Professional Conduct (RPCs)
  • Must pass a criminal history background and reference check
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Enthusiasm and desire to learn about criminal law, municipal law, legal field, and public service; Methods, principles, and practices of effective conflict resolution; Personal computers and computer programs, specifically Microsoft Office products.
  • Skill in: Correct usage of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; Professional, high quality oral and written communications; Effectively using interpersonal skills in a tactful, patient, and courteous manner; Performance of research and investigation; Working independently with minimum supervision; Meeting schedules and timelines; Using research, investigation, and analytical methods, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to: Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; Analyze, organize, and evaluate case facts, evidence, and legal precedents; Read, interpret, apply, and explain codes, rules, regulations, policies, case law, and procedures; Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; Communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing; Prepare documents using Microsoft software; Demonstrate positive and effective interaction and communication with individuals of diverse occupational and social-economic backgrounds; Work effectively on several projects concurrently and meet deadlines; Ability to de-escalate and interact calmly with confrontational individuals/situations; Maintain confidentiality.
  • Requires frequent use of typical business office machinery and equipment including, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, telephone, copy machine, fax machine, and legal research databases and Microsoft computer programs.

Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed inside but can be performed in varying temperatures. Employee may be exposed to office supply odors or vapors. Employee may also be exposed to sub-sanitary environments.
