The City of Greensboro is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Transfer Station Disposal Heavy Equipment Operator to support daily operations at the Transfer Station. This position plays a critical role in maintaining efficient solid waste disposal services while ensuring safe and compliant work practices. As a Transfer Station Disposal Heavy Equipment Operator, you will operate and maintain heavy equipment essential to waste handling and site operations. This role requires strong attention to safety, mechanical awareness, and the ability to adapt to changing conditions in a fast-paced environment.


Compensation and Benefits:

Estimated Hiring Salary Range: $43,755.00 - $53,299.00 Full Salary Range: $43,755.00 - $78,299.00 Annually

Work Schedule:
The standard week starts on Wednesday and ends on Tuesday
Rotation 4 days on 3 days off
M, T,TH, F; 5:45 AM TO 7:15 PM
Wed, Sat; 5:45 AM TO 6:45 PM

The Solid Waste Division is responsible for providing reliable disposal and waste management services to the community. The Transfer Station is a key component of that system, ensuring waste is processed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with operational standards.

About the Role:

The Transfer Station Disposal Heavy Equipment Operator must:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of heavy equipment operation and maintenance requirements

  • Read and interpret safety rules, operating manuals, maintenance instructions, and procedure guidelines

  • Learn and perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction and maintenance tasks
  • Apply mathematical calculations and understand materials used in general construction and maintenance work
  • Follow safe work practices and promptly report unsafe conditions
  • Show strong attention to detail and continuously build knowledge and technical skills
  • Adapt to frequent changes, delays, and unexpected operational events

This position requires a proactive mindset, mechanical aptitude, and a commitment to maintaining a safe and productive worksite.

Qualifications



Minimum Education and Experience Requirements


  • High School Diploma/GED, with 1+ years of experience operating a skid steer, rubber tire loader, rubber tire excavator, dump trucks, and front-end loaders
    • Or an equivalency of No High School Diploma/GED, but at least 2 years of education and 5 years of experience operating a skid steer, rubber tire loader, rubber tire excavator, dump trucks, and front-end loaders.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • NC SWANA (Solid Waste Association of North America) Transfer Station Operator's Certification ("or" the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date).
The following Management Preferences are not required, but applicants who possess these skills are preferred:
  • Experience operating heavy equipment in a landfill or transfer station environment
