Transit Supervisor - Bus Route Operations - Mass Transit Department

This class has direct oversight of vehicle operators, ensuring that public timetables/schedules, pre-trip vehicle inspections, customer service issues, and vehicle availability meet the demand for passenger trips, monitors driver performance, adherence to rules and regulations, and training. Acts as the Coordinator with the public, drivers, and staff and is responsible for scheduling and coordinating transit services, using a computerized scheduling system, in order to provide transportation for the maximum amount of riders, in the most economical and punctual manner.


This is a "mandatory-testing position" that requires Drug Testing.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and, making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations

Ensures that driver performance is regularly and adequately monitored

Determines type, number, and availability of vehicles for service; makes timely vehicle assignments

Recommends corrective action of drivers who cannot perform to standards

Assists with handling all disciplinary matters, including counseling and warnings according to procedures

Reviews trip sheets, pre/post trip inspections, and fare collections for accuracy and completeness

Conducts DOT and Driver's license checks, as required

Assists with and handles the details and procedures necessary to investigate all accidents involving ECAT drivers, passengers, and vehicles

At least annually, reviews the operating practices of individual drivers, and provides appropriate instructions to correct performance

Checks drivers for proper on-time performance and implements corrective measures, as required

Minimizes service interruptions, monitors and posts street closings/construction, determines the cause of disruptions to service, and takes appropriate measures to correct

Provides information on fare collections, driver requirement compliance, overtime, and personnel issues to the AGM of Operations on a consistent basis

Remains properly licensed, certified, and capable of operating all types of agency vehicles

Operates two-way radio system and monitors Automatic Vehicle Locator System

Receives and responds to telephone inquiries for information from the general public

Knows the procedures and acts as coordinator when weather or vehicle emergencies occur and when drivers experience vehicle problems while driving

Maintains a log of any problems related to pickups, routing, road-calls, agency emergencies, accidents, complaints, etc. and their outcome

Communicates regularly with route supervisors on transportation activities and promptly reports any unusual occurrences or major policy deviations

Cooperates with representatives of police, fire, and other city and county departments in response to special road and/or emergency conditions that might affect normal operation of Fixed Route services

Follows all safety procedures and requirements; advises supervisors of any safety problems

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level


TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualification Requirements:


Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. and three years of work experience in transit operations; or, a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid CDL driver's license with Air Brakes and Passenger endorsements; or, the ability to obtain within 60 days in this position


Preferred Qualifications:
Associate's degree
Prior supervisory experience

Emergency Management Responsibilities:
During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.


Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions as well as finger and hand dexterity.
Medium Work: Exerting in excess of 35 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises and travel.
