Key Accountabilities:


Role purpose: The Translator is responsible for providing accurate, high-quality written translations between Arabic and English across a range of museum content, including curatorial texts, exhibition labels, educational materials, publications, official correspondence, reports, and digital content. The role ensures that translations reflect the intended tone, terminology, and cultural nuance of the source material. The Translator may also be required to edit, proofread, or summarize content and will work closely with curators, editors, and other museum staff to ensure consistency and clarity in all bilingual communication.

Duties & responsibilities:
  • Read and analyze source material to accurately understand content and context, conduct research on industry-specific or specialized terminology as needed.
  • Translate written texts and audio recordings from Arabic to English and English to Arabic, ensuring accuracy, fluency, and cultural appropriateness.
  • Ensure translated content conveys the original meaning, tone, and intent of the source material across a range of document types and audiences.
  • Prepare subtitles and translated scripts for videos, online presentations, and multimedia content.
  • Cross-reference specialized dictionaries, glossaries, and digital translation tools to verify terminology and improve translation quality.
  • Proofread and edit translated texts for grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, and clarity.
  • Edit translations while preserving the structure, layout, and formatting of the original documents where required.
  • Follow up with internal team members—including curators, educators, and communications staff—to ensure translations meet content and audience expectations.
  • Adapt tone and style appropriately for different end-users, including museum visitors, sponsors, management, families, and school audiences.
  • Maintain consistency across all bilingual content and contribute to the development of internal translation style guides and terminology databases.
Qualifications/Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Translation, Interpreting, Linguistics, or a related field.
  • Additional certification in Linguistics, Arabic/English Language Studies, or related areas is an asset.
  • Minimum of 4 - 6 years of professional experience translating written texts between Arabic and English.
  • Experience working in a cultural, academic, publishing, or museum environment is highly desirable.
  • Native-level fluency in Arabic and English, with the ability to translate accurately in both directions
  • Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills with impeccable grammar, spelling, and punctuation in both languages.
  • Clear and adaptable writing style suited to different audiences and content types, including formal, academic, and public-facing materials.
  • Strong attention to detail and high standards for accuracy, consistency, and tone.
  • Ability to understand and quickly learn new concepts and terminology, including technical or specialist vocabulary relevant to museum content.
  • Familiarity with translation software and digital tools used for content editing, formatting, and file management.
  • Skilled in preparing content summaries and adapting content for various formats, including subtitles, presentations, and web-based materials.
  • Experience using content editing and publishing tools and uploading content through custom or bespoke applications when required.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple translation tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively across departments and consult with experts as needed.
  • Ability to maintain professional relationships with internal stakeholders and external collaborators.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and confident in conducting internet-based research to support translation accuracy.
