This position supports rail and transloading operations at our Ross, ND site. The role involves hands-on work outdoors in all weather conditions, loading/unloading railcars, operating equipment, and contributing to safe and efficient railcar movement.

Pay Rate: $25.50–$26.50/hour, based on experience
Schedule:
  • Standard: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • When trains need to be loaded: 24-hour coverage (two 7 AM–7 PM / 7 PM–7 AM shifts) until the train is complete


Travel: Not a regular requirement; however, once trained, employees may have opportunities to travel to support other site operations within the region.

Who We Are

Railserve is a leading provider of in-plant rail switching, transloading, and material handling services—operating at over 75 locations in North America. We use our own locomotives and employees to safely move railcars within industrial, manufacturing, and production plants.

In addition to railcar switching, we provide transloading, railcar loading/unloading, track maintenance, inspection, repair, and more.

The Role

This position supports rail and transloading operations at our Ross, ND site. The role involves hands-on work outdoors in all weather conditions, loading/unloading railcars, operating equipment, and contributing to safe and efficient railcar movement.

We are open to training candidates of all experience levels.

Once trained, employees have opportunities to travel to other Railserve locations within the region to support operations.

What you'd be doing:

  • Inspects locomotive before operating to verify specified fuel, sand, water, and other supplies.
  • Receives starting signal from foreman or helper and moves controls, such as throttle and airbrakes, to move locomotive.
  • Interprets train orders, train signals, and rules and regulations to operate locomotive, following safety regulations, operating procedures, and switching schedule.
  • Assists crew leader in training new employees.
  • Observes track to detect obstructions.
  • Prepares reports to explain accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays.
  • Lubricates moving parts of locomotive.
  • Handle train equipment in a safe manner using independent or automatic brakes.
  • Operation of hand or ground throw switches, derails, gates, etc.
  • Control movement of equipment by radio, hands, and lantern.
  • Apply and release hand brakes to secure or move equipment.
  • Handling air hoses, wheel chocks, coupling and uncoupling of rail cars.
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Military experience helpful

  • All experience levels welcome — training provided

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Dependable and punctual, with reliable transportation

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Strong communication and active listening skills

  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

Physical Demands

  • Frequent standing and walking

  • Occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, or crawling

  • Ability to lift and move heavy items

  • Full range of vision required: distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, focus

Environmental Conditions

  • Industrial outdoor environment

  • Moderate to heavy physical activity

  • Use of hand tools and power tools

  • Must follow all safety procedures and wear required PPE
