Transport Manager – Roles & Responsibilities1. Fleet Management
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and utilisation of company vehicles.
- Ensure vehicles are properly serviced, inspected, and compliant with safety standards.
- Manage fuel usage, vehicle tracking systems, and cost-efficient routing.
2. Compliance & Legal Requirements
- Ensure compliance with transport regulations (e.g., licensing, permits, driver hours, safety standards).
- Maintain accurate records required by transport authorities.
- Implement policies to meet health and safety regulations.
3. Driver Management
- Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate drivers.
- Schedule drivers and allocate routes to maximise efficiency.
- Ensure drivers follow company policies and legal requirements.
- Handle driver performance issues, grievances, and training needs.
4. Route Planning & Scheduling
- Plan efficient delivery or transport routes to reduce costs and meet deadlines.
- Monitor real-time transport movements and adjust schedules when necessary.
- Coordinate with logistics, warehouse, or operations teams for seamless delivery.
5. Cost Control & Budgeting
- Monitor and control transport expenses (fuel, repairs, tolls, staff costs).
- Prepare budgets and implement cost-saving measures.
- Negotiate with suppliers (fuel vendors, maintenance providers, leasing companies).
6. Safety & Risk Management
- Maintain accident-free operations through training and strict safety protocols.
- Investigate transport incidents and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure safe loading, unloading, and cargo handling procedures.
7. Communication & Coordination
- Liaise with customers, suppliers, and internal departments to ensure smooth operations.
- Handle customer queries related to deliveries, delays, or transport issues.
- Prepare regular transport operation reports for management.
8. Technology & Reporting
- Use transport management systems (TMS), GPS tracking, and fleet software.
- Generate performance metrics: delivery times, fuel usage, costs, fleet utilisation.
- Introduce automation and digital tools to improve efficiency.
9. Continuous Improvement
- Analyse transport data to identify inefficiencies.
- Implement improvements in route planning, fleet usage, and operational processes.
- Stay updated with industry trends, technology, and regulations.
