Transportation Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker Trainee - Upshur County

Nature of Work

The Transportation Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker Trainee will report to the Equipment Division in Upshur County. In a training capacity, this position performs a variety of entry level work in building trades in connection with the maintenance and repair of Transportations’ facilities, buildings and grounds. The incumbent in this position will perform routine manual work cleaning in and around the buildings and facilities of the Equipment Division. Work involves maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in an assigned area, such as disinfecting and sanitizing facilities, sweeping and mopping floors, disposing of trash and waste materials, cleaning restrooms and replenishing with supplies, sweeping sidewalks, shoveling snow and applying salt to walkways and parking areas as necessary. May be exposed to inclement weather. Work consists of training to gain knowledge of maintenance and repair methods and practices in several building maintenance trades. Performs related work as required.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Assists with repairs and replaces walls, floors, steps, doors, window frames and other wooden articles or equipment using saws, power and hand tools.
• Assists with repairs and replaces lighting fixtures, bulbs, switches, and wiring; installs simple electrical equipment and assists in installation and repair of electrical equipment.
• Repairs and replaces sinks, toilets, faucets, pipes, drains, and water lines; unstops toilets, drains and sewer lines.
• Training in checking equipment to determine operational readiness.
• Trains on how to diagnose less complex mechanical problems.
• Assists in performing masonry repair work such as preparing cement, installing reinforcing steel rods, patching and finishing cement work, and replacing damaged masonry.
• Paints window frames, buildings, sheds, rooms, and equipment.
• Gathers and disposes of trash and waste materials.
• Moves furniture, loads and unloads supplies, moves equipment by hand or with dollies and performs other manual tasks.
• Assists in repairing and maintaining tools and equipment used.
• Performs routine grounds work such as mowing and trimming, removing snow, sweeping sidewalks, and picking up trash.
• Perform building service work such as sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors and washing walls, windows, mirrors and fixtures..
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.

Skills and Knowledge

• Knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools and equipment used in a variety of building maintenance trades.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and related safety procedures.
• Ability to safely operate tools and equipment used in building maintenance .
• Ability to perform routine carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry work.
• Ability to determine materials needed for specific tasks.
• Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
• Ability to perform arduous tasks .
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
