Job Summary
Our The NEMT Driver safely transports passengers to and from non-emergency medical appointments, such as doctor visits, dialysis, physical therapy, and hospital discharges. The driver provides courteous, professional assistance while ensuring passenger safety, comfort, and on-time service in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred but not always required.
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (per company and insurance requirements).
- Previous professional driving, NEMT, paratransit, taxi, courier, or delivery experience preferred but not required.
- Safe and responsible driving skills in all weather and traffic conditions.
- Ability to read maps, follow GPS, and navigate the service area efficiently.
- Good communication skills and a professional, courteous manner.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete basic paperwork/ electronic forms.
- Basic smartphone/tablet/computer skills for dispatch and trip documentation.
- Ability to assist passengers with limited mobility, including pushing wheelchairs and occasionally supporting passengers as they walk.
- Ability to lift, bend, stoop, and secure mobility devices; may include lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to follow schedules and instructions.
- Patient, compassionate, and comfortable working with elderly, disabled, or medically fragile individuals.
- Ability to frequently get in and out of the vehicle and assisting passengers at residences and medical facilities.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule: Work schedules may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on operational needs.
Job Responsibilities
- Safely operate company vehicles to transport passengers to and from scheduled medical appointments.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and promptly report any mechanical or safety issues.
- Follow all traffic laws, company driving policies, and safety procedures.
- Properly secure wheelchairs, stretchers, and mobility devices using approved securement systems.
- Assist passengers with entering and exiting the vehicle, including use of ramps, lifts, and steps.
- Treat all passengers with dignity, respect, and professionalism.
- Offer appropriate assistance to elderly, disabled, or mobility-challenged passengers.
- Maintain passenger confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and company privacy policies.
- Communicate courteously with passengers, caregivers, facilities, and dispatch regarding trip status and any issues.
- Follow daily schedules and routes as assigned by dispatch, communicating delays or changes promptly.
- Use company technology (tablets, phones, MDTs, apps) to receive trips, update statuses, and capture signatures.
- Accurately complete trip logs, mileage, time records, and any required forms or electronic documentation.
- Report no-shows, cancellations, incidents, and changes in a timely and accurate manner.
- Keep the vehicle clean, organized, and presentable inside and out.
- Follow infection control and sanitation procedures, including cleaning after spills or bodily fluids when required.
- Ensure adequate fuel levels and supplies (securement equipment, PPE, forms, etc.) before and during shifts.
- Comply with all company policies, broker rules, and applicable state/local regulations.
- Maintain required licenses, driving record standards, medical clearances, and certifications.
- Attend required training sessions, safety meetings, and performance reviews.
