Idaho Novus Classical Academy is a tuition-free, public charter school, and a member of the Hillsdale College K-12 Charter School Initiative. Our building is located in the Avimor Community of Eagle, Idaho, approximately 16-miles north of downtown Boise. The mission of Idaho Novus Classical Academy is to train the minds and improve the hearts of students through a classical, content-rich curriculum that emphasizes virtuous living, traditional learning, and civic responsibility. To accomplish this mission, we offer students an American classical education.

We are conducting a search for a mission aligned Transportation Supervisor / Mechanic.

Position Title: Transportation Supervisor / Mechanic
Reports To: Director of Operations

Overview:

The Transportation Supervisor/Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the school’s transportation program. This includes route planning, driver supervision and training, vehicle maintenance and inspections, student behavior management and support, and coordination with school leadership to ensure full compliance with Idaho Department of Education (IDE) transportation reporting requirements.

In alignment with the mission of Idaho Novus Classical Academy, this role also supports student character development and family communication, while ensuring that students arrive at school ready to learn in a safe, respectful, and structured environment.

Key Responsibilities:Transportation Operations & Oversight

· Provide entry-level training to new drivers, and provide leadership and mentorship to experienced drivers.

· Develop, revise, and manage bus routes and schedules in accordance with IDE guidelines and local safety standards.

· Coordinate substitute driver coverage and ensure uninterrupted transportation services.

· Maintain and manage digital systems used to monitor school bus safety.

Student Safety & Behavior

· Establish and implement behavior expectations aligned with the school culture and support a safe, respectful climate on all buses.

· Train drivers in student management techniques and collaborate with school leaders to address behavior concerns.

· Monitor and report stop-arm violations in coordination with law enforcement and school leadership.

· Participate in school emergency preparedness planning, and ensure that all transportation staff are trained in safety and evacuation procedures.

Vehicle Maintenance & Safety Compliance

· Perform or oversee regular maintenance and mechanical repairs of the school bus fleet, ensuring vehicles meet all Idaho State School Bus Inspection Standards.

· Perform required 60-day inspections, and upload results into iBUS.

· Maintain detailed records of repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance schedules.

· Conduct and enforce daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure roadworthiness.

Driver Supervision, Training, & Evaluation

· Recruit, train, and supervise school bus drivers and substitute drivers, ensuring all meet CDL licensing requirements with appropriate P, S, and air brake endorsements.

· Provide annual and ongoing training in:

  • Student behavior management
  • Defensive driving and emergency procedures
  • Compliance with IDE transportation regulations

State Compliance & Reporting

· Prepare and submit all required reports to the Idaho State Department of Education, including:

  • Reimbursement Claim Forms
  • Daily and Monthly Mileage/Odometer Logs
  • Student Ridership Counts

· Track fuel usage, vehicle mileage, and maintenance logs for state audits and reimbursement eligibility.

Field Trips & Extracurricular Coordination

· Coordinate and schedule transportation for athletics, field trips, and extracurricular activities.

· Ensure appropriate vehicle availability, driver staffing, and trip safety planning.

Communication & Family Engagement

· Serve as the primary point of contact for transportation-related concerns, including route questions, delays, or scheduling changes.

Qualifications:

· Valid Class B CDL with Passenger (P), School Bus (S), and Air Brake endorsements.

· At least 3 years of experience in school bus operations or fleet management.

· General knowledge of diesel mechanics and vehicle maintenance.

· Familiarity with Idaho school transportation regulations and reporting protocols.

Preferred:

· ASE Certification in Medium/Heavy Truck or School Bus Repair.

· Experience working in a charter school or small district.

Compensation will be determined based on experience.
