Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for an Emergency Department position at a teaching hospital near Chicago, IL, requiring a minimum of 2 years of ED experience and an active IL RN license.

Details

  • Work in a 24-bed Emergency Department at a 231-bed teaching hospital located approximately 30 minutes from Chicago in Hazel Crest, IL
  • Patient population spans neonates to geriatrics with case types including minor trauma (MVAs), sepsis, COVID, STEMI, stroke, DKA, mental health, respiratory, cardiac, and neuro presentations
  • RN-to-patient ratio is 1:5; a 5th patient will be low acuity and may occur during surge periods
  • Tech ratio is 1:10–12, with CNAs, a charge nurse, RT, and phlebotomy available for support
  • Charting system is Epic; Pyxis medication dispensing, Alaris IV pumps, and bedside/station monitors are used
  • 12-hour day shifts with a 7am start; variable start times may apply and schedule is not self-directed
  • Schedule is built 4 weeks at a time and distributed 1–2 weeks in advance; block scheduling is not accommodated
  • Every-other-weekend rotation required; rare back-to-back weekends are possible
  • No on-call or call-back requirements
  • No floating required
  • Travelers are not expected to cover the triage area

Requirements

  • Active IL RN license required
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; PALS preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of ED experience required
  • Travel experience required if fewer than 2 years of ED experience; first-time travelers with 2+ years of ED experience will be considered
  • Strong skills in cardiac rhythm interpretation, IV access, EKG interpretation, and ED drip/medication administration
  • Epic EMR experience preferred
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
  • Minimum 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN

Additional Information

  • Orientation consists of a few hours with an educator for system access and modules, followed by 1–2 supervised shifts on the unit
  • COVID vaccination is required for this position
  • Summer holiday coverage requires working 2 of the following 3 holidays: Memorial Day, Labor Day, and July 4th
  • Winter holiday coverage requires working 1 from each group: {Thanksgiving Day or the day after}, {Christmas Eve or Christmas Day}, and {New Year's Eve or New Year's Day}
  • Scrub color requirement is navy blue
  • Free parking is available in designated areas
  • Artificial fingernails and nail extenders are not permitted during direct patient care; natural nail tips must be kept under ¼ inch in length
