Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Neonatal ICU position requiring at least 2 years of Level 3 and/or Level 4 NICU experience in a high-acuity teaching hospital setting.

Details

  • 53-bed NICU unit with average census of 58, including overflow capacity, within a 247-licensed-bed Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and teaching hospital
  • High-acuity neonatal patient population including respiratory (RDS, TTN, MAS, BPD), cardiac (TOF, VSD, HLHS, PDA, PPHN), neurological (seizures, IVH, HIE), and GI/GU/endocrine conditions (NEC, NAS, sepsis, congenital anomalies, and more)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios vary based on acuity: 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3
  • 12-hour day shift, 7:00 AM–7:00 PM (with actual shift times of 6:45 AM–7:15 PM), 36 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation requires 2 Fridays, 2 Mondays, and every other Saturday/Sunday within each 6-week scheduling cycle
  • No on-call requirements for travelers; if the NICU cannot utilize a traveler, floating to similar units may occur
  • Floating may be required to Neonatal PCU, Gen Peds, Pediatric CVICU, and PICU as a helping hand (unless candidate has prior experience in those populations)
  • EMR: Epic experience required
  • IV pumps: Alaris and Medfusion syringe pumps; medication dispensing via Omnicell; monitoring via Philips

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required
  • Current BLS and NRP certifications required
  • Minimum 2 years of Level 3 and/or Level 4 NICU experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
  • Must be comfortable working in a high-acuity, fast-paced environment
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Required skills include: vasoactive drip titration, invasive line management (ART lines/CVP), ventilator and trach management, ECMO (baby side), CRRT, EVDs, Camino device (ICP and temp monitoring), chest tubes, epidurals, PCAs, sedation/analgesic drip management, g-tube/j-tube and feeding tube management, Foley insertion, oral/nasal suctioning, aseptic and sterile technique, basic dressing changes, and Alaris/Medfusion pump management (manager has been flexible on EVD, ICP, ECMO, and CRRT experience)
  • 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN required for consideration
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
  • Candidates must reside 50+ miles from the facility to be eligible for this position

Additional Information

  • Robust unit support includes a unit secretary, charge nurse, IV/VAT/PICC team, resource nurse, RT, intensivist, residents, APP, centralized and bedside telemetry monitoring, unit-based educators (AM and PM), and 6 clinical supervisors — all available 24/7 where noted
  • Orientation consists of a NEO session plus 2 days of departmental orientation
  • Scheduling is done on a 6-week cycle based on unit needs after the core team schedule is completed; the Clinical Supervisor will provide dates of need
  • Travelers are expected to work holidays as scheduled; unit requirement includes the day of the holiday and the eve and/or day after, every other holiday while on contract
  • RTO requires manager approval; significant RTO needs may require a contract extension
  • Scrubs must be solid navy; long-sleeve shirts underneath are permitted in solid navy or white only; scrub tops should be pediatric-friendly with no tight-fitting scrubs and no other organizational branded attire
  • "Bare Below Elbow" policy is enforced in the nursery — no watches, jewelry (real or plastic rings), or artificial nails
  • Unit culture emphasizes teamwork, trust, accountability, respect, and flexibility
  • First-time travelers will be considered on a case-by-case basis with manager approval depending on current staffing
  • Candidates who have worked a permanent position at an Advocate Health Southeast (AHSE) facility must have been separated for at least 1 year before being eligible
