American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position in Rapid City, SD, requiring at least 1 year of PCU or telemetry experience and cardiac drip titration skills.

56-bed Progressive Care Unit (PCU) in an inpatient hospital setting
-
Adult patient population with a variety of diagnoses including CHF, ARF, hepatitis, ESLD, DM/DKA, pneumonia, sepsis, GI bleed, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary emboli, respiratory failure, COPD, arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremens

RN patient ratio of 1:4 on PCU/Telemetry (days and nights)

12-hour day shifts, 36 hours per week

Weekend rotation required — every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
-
Holiday coverage required for every other holiday within the contracted timeframe
-
Floating required in rotation with other travelers to adult inpatient units including Med/Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, ICU (depending on experience), and Observation

EMR: Epic (preferred); also uses Alaris and Omnicell
-
Pre-shift huddle attendance required at 0625 (days) in the 7th floor conference room
-
Active RN license — South Dakota (SD) or Compact license required
-
Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
-
Minimum 1 year of PCU or telemetry RN experience required
-
Cardiac rhythm interpretation proficiency required
-
Experience with cardiac and vasoactive drip titration required, including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and Levophed
-
Skills required: IV starts, blood product administration, CIWA protocol, drain/tube management, indwelling and straight catheter insertion/management, insulin drips (DKA and non-DKA), continuous bladder irrigation, and chest tube maintenance

Graduation from a board-approved nursing education program required

2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration

DOB and SSN required for consideration

First-time travelers are welcome to apply if they have more than 2 years of RN experience

Candidates must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible

Former permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning in a travel capacity

Epic experience is preferred; candidates without Epic experience may require additional manager approval

Orientation includes 2 days of in-class/online education followed by two 12-hour precepted shifts
-
Unit support includes 24/7 charge nurses (2, free-floating), phlebotomy, respiratory therapy, hospitalist coverage, centralized telemetry monitoring, a Resource/Flex RN, and a Violent Incident Response team
-
The unit uses a team nursing model on the Med/Surg floor pairing RNs with LPNs, with each clinician maintaining their own patient load and some task-sharing based on scope of practice

Travelers may occasionally be asked to precept nursing students

Monthly audits are conducted for pre/post pain scoring — 90% compliance required

No RTO approved during the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August)

RTO of up to 7 days may be approved; a full contract week must be made up if time off is taken
