A Triage RN in Endocrinology assesses patient urgency, conducts phone triage, and provides direct care for endocrine conditions like diabetes. Key responsibilities include evaluating symptoms, prioritizing care, coordinating with providers, managing medication refills and prior authorizations, documenting interactions in electronic health records (EHR), and educating patients. This role involves both administrative tasks and patient-facing duties, often requiring strong communication skills and knowledge of endocrine disorders and treatments.

Key responsibilities

  • Patient assessment and triage: Evaluate patient symptoms via phone or in-person to determine the urgency and direct them to the appropriate level of care.
  • Provider collaboration: Work with endocrinologists and other healthcare team members to relay critical information and coordinate patient care.
  • Medication management: Handle prescription refills, obtain prior authorizations for medications, and educate patients on new prescriptions.
  • Patient education: Provide education on endocrine disorders, treatment plans, and the use of diabetes technology.
  • Documentation: Accurately document all patient interactions, assessments, and care provided in the patient's electronic health record (EHR).
  • Administrative support: Assist with tasks like scheduling, insurance pre-authorizations, and coordinating referrals.
  • Follow-up and results: Contact patients to relay test results and provide follow-up instructions as directed by physicians.
  • Quality improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives and team meetings.

Position Requirements
  • Active RN license and a degree from an accredited nursing program.
  • Experience in endocrinology or diabetes care is often preferred.
  • Familiarity with EHR systems and other healthcare software.

Physical Demands:

May spend a great deal of their professional day walking, standing, moving and manipulating equipment, as well as lifting and moving objects, equipment and supplies. Ability to lift 20 pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients or objects may involve lifting of up to 50 pounds, as well as assist with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds. Requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend or twist their body, as well as visual acuity.
